Mount Holly - The Burlington County freeholders yesterday gave their
unanimous support to an effort to have a road declared a Pinelands
Scenic Byway.

"We feel this designation will help highlight the Pinelands and its
unique assets," said Matt Johnson, Burlington County open space
coordinator, at the freeholders' conference meeting yesterday.

The classification was proposed by the New Jersey Pinelands
Commission, which wants to apply to the state and federal government
for the designation, Johnson said.

"The commission is in the preliminary stages of the project and is
just seeking the county's support," Johnson said.

The Pinelands Reserve covers more than a million acres in seven South
Jersey counties, including Pemberton, Woodland, Washington, Bass River
and Tabernacle townships in Burlington.

The designation also would offer the Pinelands an element of
protection by drawing attention to the area, Johnson said.

If the designation were granted, municipalities would pay to erect
identification and interpretive signs along Route 542 and other key
spots, Johnson said.

The Pinelands Commission oversees the 1.1 million-acre Pinelands
Reserve. The state-designated protection area was established 23 years
ago to protect the unique habitat, officials said.

Resolutions supporting the byway designation have so far been
approved by Washington and Bass River townships, Johnson said.
