Bear Swamp Hill
39° 45.155(N) 74° 27.906(W)
Bear Swamp Hill is located in the Penn State Forest, and was the location of a former recreation area and fire lookout that is no longer in use. In 1971 the fire tower there was destroyed by an Air National Guard Jet, with only the cement base remaining today. This was the tower that John McPhee wrote about in the first paragraph of his book "The Pine Barrens". The direction to get there are as follows:
From the fire house in Chatsworth 39°49.122(N) 74°32.138(W) take 563 south for 7 tenths of a mile to where 563 curves to the right and a smaller paved road goes straight. Leave 563 and take the road straight. Travel on this road for 5.3 miles, making sure you take the right fork at the only paved fork that you come to. The road you are on will eventually turn to dirt, and once you have reached 5.3 miles, turn right at the four way dirt intersection. 39°45.341(N) 74°28.024(W)
Then travel 1 to 2 tenths of a mile to a partially paved road on your left, which leads to the parking area and summit of Bear Swamp Hill.
