The following article appears in "Nature Conservany" publication, Volume 6, Number 3, p. 60.

" In 1994 the Conservancy began negotiations with developer Leisure Technology on land donations totaling 4,860 acres in the Berkeley Triangle of New Jersey's Pine Barrens. The Conservancy received the final donation this spring and will transfer 388 acres to the New Jersey Natural Lands Trust's Crossley Preserve and 312 acres to Double Trouble State Park. The areas pine-oak forests and cedar swamps provide habitat for the imperiled pine barrens tree frog [photo] and Pickerings morning glory."

Any comments about this area?

4,860 acres in the Berkeley Triangle of New Jersey's Pine Barrens.

Never heard it called that before. Is that anything like the Bermuda Triangle? :)

But I'm glad they're pulling this deal off. They have a preserve right down the street from me also. I wish they would update their website with more information about their various properties. Much of the NJ section of their site is unfinished.

Crossley was a clay mining town from the early 20th century. Has a lot of neat plants and is a real hot spot for snakes from what I hear. They like the railroad embankment. I like the crossley preserve and may be in it this weekend. It is unusual. The terrain is a little different. Many water holes where they dug the clay out. Has the largest stand of Pickerings I have ever seen. Lovely, very nice. They have an interpretive trail that winds around the main area. It is very neat, not well known, a little jewel of the pines.

Boyd, i think some of the spots are left unfinished on purpose. I don't think they want to give directions out to some of the smalller places because certain reptiles are on the grounds that are extremely rare, is hirst pond preserve the one near you.

No, I believe it's called the "Dorothy Preserve," and the sign says NJ Conservation Association or something like that. I had never heard of it, so I Goggled and it took me to the Nature Conservancy website.

Here's their NJ page:

(EDIT) Hmm, looks like I might have my organizations confused. This is the NJ Conservation Foundation website:

http://www.njconservation.org/html/wherewework.htm

Most of the links there just say "coming soon." So I guess this isn't part of the Nature Conservancy after all?...

I think nature conservancy is buying up land frequently, they seem like a really good organization. I mainly hike at only nc owned sites, but I have come across many of there signs and haven't been able to figure out the names of the places, they seem to be constantly adding land to previous areas.
