another river Marianne will never paddle with me again.
Actually , this river is every bit as robust as the upper Wading (Speedwell), or the Mullica (Hampton Furnace). The problem is it is seldom paddeled and therefore not maintained. Lots of downed trees, branches, leaves and spiders. Not fun on a sticky, hot July day. Marianne insists Nescochague is indian for YUCK. Anyway, on my next paddle I'll clean some of it up.

The lake that feeds it is a private campground, Paridise Lakes, probably no more than a flodded bog. We didn't start there, but rather north, but I bet we could make a deal. We entered the forest at mile marker 4 on 206. The launch point is about 4 miles in, and clearly has no other use. The outlet is at the Plesant Mills church on 542. Just as you cross the bridge is a marked canoe landing on the right. As it turned out I wouldn't do it this way again, as after the bridge there are many fallen trees which you must climb over. Also, there is alot of trash after the bridge, because when it was open it was a big paryt spot. There is a good landing right before the bridge which also saves a longgggg drive to Plesant Mills.

Anyway, I didn't take pictures of the river, becuse it looks like all the others, BUT 2/3 of the way down we came upon an abandoned campground. We noticed the wall as we were paddeling...

Truthfully, Marianne made the connection to a campground from the utilities

I'm going to ruin the suspence for you, but there were no bodies in the refrigerators or freezers. Remember, I grew up in the 50's, going to monster matinees every Saturday. After this trip i watched one of my favorite camping videos, Friday the 13th. I also like Meatballs and Frogs.

Anyway, I'm going back soon to look for the manufacturing date on the firg, and for receipts in the officc to get an idea on when it was abandoned.

Just a thought for you wierd types, we could camp there.... camp crystal lake/blood!

Great post Ed. Nice camera, what is it?

I have canoed similar hard-luck creeks; Mt misery brook from rt 70 to just downstream from Country Lakes and another small branch of the rancocas from Country lakes to the same spot. We did that in several rafts and 2 cases of beer. Great fun.

Well I've never gone canoeing except 2 or 3 times with a cousin in `84 and maybe a couple times since. We went on the Mullica, right from their yard in Sweetwater. And I've only seen the Nescochague on the maps. Never been on it. This campground sounds interesting. Did you happen to see any roads going away from it? I'm curious of how to get to it by road (sand or dirt road, or otherwise). Maybe it shows up on the topo maps. Off of Indian Cabin Road in Mullica, west of 563 near the Egg Harbor Lake there is an abandoned camp of some kind. I have pictures but I don't know how to attach them to this post. The place is posted No Trespassing, and it looks as though someone may live on the grounds in an RV or something, just to watch the place. From the entrance you can see a car or truck and maybe an RV. I forget exactly. On the topo map of the area it simply says "boys camp". Here it is on Topozone:

Barry,

There is a road that leads up to it, but I think it comes from private property. There's also a chain link fence with barbed wire across the road. The only (safe) way in is from the river.

Bob,

My camera is a Canon A-40, an upgrade from Guy's A-30. They're both 2 M pix, the A-40 is better in low light. They're both easy to use, now there's brobably a newer version.

Like you, I like to go where noone has been in a while. We frequently kayak the Skit Branch of the Batsto from the Boot Camp on Caranzza Rd to Hampton Furnace. My next adventure will be the Tupelhoking (sp?) creek, from the Friendship area to Hawkin Bridge. I'll waite for more water. A couple of weeks ago we paddled upstream from Hawkin Bridge, It was quite open with large sundews in flower. The other adventure id the Batsto from the boot camp on Caranzza Rd to Hampton Furnace. That one will be brutal!

DIRECTIONS TO ACE CAMPGROUND PLEASE!I keep getting lost!

TeeGate
03-20-04, 07:32 PM
Your first post and you put it in bold letters, and red at that! How about "I would like to know how to get to Ace Campground, could anyone tell me?"

You did put "please" so that is a good start.

I have to tell you the state now owns the property, and they have a fence with a gate and it has a lock on it. So they apparently do not want anyone roaming around in there, and they may not want people posting on how to get there.

So everyone, is that a good answer or am I wrong?

I don't know Guy, seems kind of strange to not tell him when you tell us that you "slipped around the gate" on the next post. :)

You not telling him is a personal decision, and thats your choice and your right. In that case, no response by you would have been fine (let someone else stick out their neck).

But, if you did make the choice to help him out, I can see giving him directions to the fence and letting him make the adult decision on his own on whether or not to enter. But to not give anyone directions should not be a hard and fast rule of this website.

And now I'm going to seem like I want it both ways. I would make it a hard and fast rule to not reveal endangered plant and animal locations. That makes me a hypocrite, oh well........

bob

bruset
03-21-04, 08:07 AM
You can't really slip around the gate since the fence goes into the woods on either direction. You could always climb it, but the barbed wire might ruin your day.

The best way in is via the river. Grab a kayak, follow the directions in Ed's post, and you'll find it.

Would you rather visit an abandoned campground that is in nice shape, or one that has been vandalized and trashed?

TeeGate
03-22-04, 08:18 PM
The campground is actually more a trailer park than a campground. They rented small lots or spaces where you parked your trailer. Each section has an electrical hookup, and it appears a septic hookup also. They have a small beach, but the lake is really nice. That is probably the best thing about the place.

If you do go there, look for the owners name and the year engraved on the cement culvert not far from the main gate.

http://www.njpinebarrens.com/~teegate/post/ace.JPG

I also did some investigating back when we were visiting the place, and I contacted someone I figured could help me out. He responded to my questions with the below answer. It is slightly edited.

**************

The 'Ace Campsite' is no more. The property was sold to the State of
New Jersey, who hasn't did a thing with it.

This is all I know. ------- are 'hush hush' about
this subject.

Merle owned several propertys in and around Hammonton. He has since
become bed-ridden and is going senile.

The original name was 'Camp Swampy'. It was changed to 'Ace
Campground' so it would be the first listing in the yellow pages
under 'campsites'.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
************

Remember it is owned by the state. Steve can tell you what the state does to you when you go on property they don't want you on. Enter at your own risk! Also, there are homes in the vicinity. They may be watching out for the place. We did most of our exploring by kayaking down the Nescochague and walking in, which kept our visit a secret. If you drive in you will be noticed.

We must keep in mind that it was a campground where people from all over came to stay, and they all know about the places just like us. The dirt road in front of the place ends at the gate, but it is well used.

Anyone who kayaks down the Nescochague as Ed did, surly will stop as he did when you come to the beach. And as I have reported the state now owns it, and someone from the state has a key and must check on it so they have been there most likely. And the gate only keeps you out when you come from the road. The woods on it's borders are open.

So it is premature to think that our posts have caused any vandalism there.

It's not the people who post on the forums that I am concerned about. It's the thousands of people who lurk, read the forums, and explore without contributing anything back to the group.

The ban on directions is meant to make it harder for the casual surfer to come on, find out how to get somewhere, and then ravage the place.

This site pushes out about 10gb and 50,000 hits per month. A lot of that I am sure are people looking for artifacts, or places to cause mischief.

All of what you say may be true. However it is a fact that nodrogyetter and JohnnyGunther (and possibly you) are posting from the same computer. This leads us to believe that the two are the same person. If they are not the same person then they are friends or siblings. It is Gunther's maturity level that has ruined it for you all (if you are more than one person). Immature people can not be trusted to respect the Pines and all that it holds. But don't worry, not all is doom and gloom. Most, but not all, people grow into maturity. It just takes a long time.
As for you're comment about the possibility that you will be banned by association, that may well happen. Remember this is not a democracy here on this site. The owner of this site is it's absolute ruler and can ban people at his whim. I would not hold it against him if he banned everyone associated with nodrogyetter and JohnnyGunther.

What Johnny Gunther said on this site should not be tolerated for one second. So if nodrogyetter and JohnnyGunther are one in the same, they (he) should be banned. I myself have quite strong language, but I do not at anytime use it on this site. I was shocked to see it even posted. Did this person deserve to be attacked by Johnny ? ABSOLUTELY NOT ! Trying to publicly humilate another person is very imature and that person should not be trusted. Prove yourself worthy and you will probably get privleged information. Give respect and you'll get respect.

I'd say you give him too much credit. When I asked him how long it took him to think up his response to me all he could come up with was "shut up".

They're all the same person.

This is the IP information for ppv's post above:

So mrppv is posting from Gunther's computer, or am I misreading it?

ppv is posting from the Comcast @Work cable modem, along with Johnny's other fake accounts.

The first round of Johnny Gunther posts came from 68.46.0.33. This, incidentally, is the same IP address that nodrogyetter posted from, as well as the one he emailed me from this morning asking why he was banned

The kid has problems.

Last year on this day you redid the site in honor of Jeff D. (That was a great one!) Maybe this kid is just playing a sick April fool's joke..though I somehow doubt it.

I wonder how long it will take for Ace to get posted in some Weird NJ mag. That's almost a certain doom for that place. Besides the pay phone, the place has been pretty well preserved. If it was to be in a Weird NJ mag then i'm sure it wouldn't be long before it is turned into a dump.

Maybe it is Jeff!

wouldn't that be something? but I don't think he would do that, this is too childish.

Yeah, I have to give Jeff more credit than that.

I am sure that this is some 16 year old kid trying to be "funny." In one of his posts he said it was a WeirdNJ fan club attacking the site, but since all of his posts are the same, and come from the same IP address, he's full of it.

He's just some bored, lonely kid. Really sad to be so young and nothing better to do on a Friday night than sit at the computer.

Well, I hope someday he grows up into a decent, respectable person...really.

Who ever thought that when Ed started this post, it would become what appears to be one of the most viewed threads yet!

Really!
I was shocked that Bigbadhoss was him too. I should know by now not to trust so easily. :( How do you guys deal with all of that stuff? I know the stuff he said about me made me feel pretty upset.

Wow, those campground pictures are great. Imagine finding all that hidden away like that. I'm sorry that the phone is gone, I'd have liked to see that!

Yup. All of that pre-pubsecent energy wasted.

The funny thing is that

a) he thinks that he will bring down the site
b) he thinks that he is funny
c) he thinks that anyone cares

Keep posting, man. I love deleting posts! :) I haven't had this much fun in ages.

This is, however, why directions won't be posted on the site. People like this guy.

All three of the people that are banned could be the same person? And it could be another person that was banned?

I have visited ace campground and found it to be a very interesting place.
It was raining out to make it seem errie. I was amazed at how the campground is still in good shape and there is still stuff left behind from years ago. I hope that Ace stays hidden well, and is never destroyed.
A really cool place.
