This is from Linda Stanton. If you plan on coming to this event make sure you read this.

Our area of Pleasant Mills and Sweetwater and Batsto took some hard hits from IRENE. As you think about going to Batsto, please keep the following in mind:

1. CURRENTLY - RT 542 is closed to thru traffic from Batsto Church to Batsto Village. The bridge has flooded and may be compromised. No word on that as yet.

2. INDEFINITELY - Pleasant Mills Road is closed to thru traffic from Rt 542/Nesco Road to Jackson Road. The road has caved-in along the lake and across from the Old Mill.

If Rt 542 remains closed in that area, those coming from Hammonton will have to bear right onto Jackson Road off of Nesco Road/Rt 542...go to the stop sign and turn right on to Pleasant Mills Road. Follow the detour signs which will bring you to Back Road, etc. With the current detour, it will add about 20 minutes to your drive.

Turtle passed this along to me today. If you are traveling to Batsto anytime soon you will need to follow these.

Directions to Batsto Village/Wharton State Forest with detours.

From the Northwest – NJ Turnpike to Rt. 206 south. South to Route 70 east (traffic circle). East to Rt. 72 east (traffic circle). East to Rt. 563 and make a right onto Rt. 563.….. *

From the Northeast Garden State Parkway – Exit #52 (New Gretna) to Route 9 south. One mile after getting on Route 9, bear right at the Citgo Gas Station and follow Route 542 approx. 12 miles to Batsto Village. Follow directions below when encountering detour signs at Bel Haven Paddlesports.

From any direction north, one travels Route 563 south to Route 542 and turns right onto that road, traveling west.
*** Upon reaching Bel Haven Paddlesports, there is a "Road Closed/Bridge Out" detour barrier. It states "Local Traffic Only", to which we added a tyvek sign stating "AND BATSTO". Folks need to go around that detour to reach Batsto as they normally would. Most people don't realize that Batsto is Local Traffic.

Folks coming from the Garden State Parkway and Route 542 westbound will follow the above directions upon reaching Bel Haven Paddlesports.

From Route 206/Route 30/Philadelphia it becomes more difficult.

1. CURRENTLY - RT 542 eastbound is closed to thru traffic from the Batsto Church to Batsto Village. This road is closed until further notice

2. INDEFINITELY - Pleasant Mills Road is closed to thru traffic from Rt. 542/Nesco Road to Jackson Road. The road has caved-in along the lake and across from the Old Mill.

Those traveling from the Hammonton/Phila direction will have to bear right onto Jackson Road from Route 542 (Nesco Road) This is the left-hand bend at the blueberry fields about 1.5 miles prior to reaching Batsto. Bear right and go 1 mile to the stop sign and turn right on to Pleasant Mills Road. Follow the detour signs for 4 miles which will bring you to Back Road in Weekstown. At the end of Back Road (1/4 mile), make a left and follow this road (Route 563) for 1.5 miles over the Green Bank Bridge. Make a left at the base of the bridge and follow for 1/2 mile to Route 542 (Bel Haven Paddlesports). Go around this detour sign which states "Local Traffic Only" "And Batsto" and continue 4 miles to Batsto Village. With the current detour, it will add about 15 minutes to your travel time.
People traveling from the south through Egg Harbor City will remain on Route 563 until arriving at Bel Haven Paddlesports, following the previous directions in bold.

Regardless of which direction one travels from - everyone will end up at Bel Haven Paddlesports in order to reach Batsto. It is a canoe/kayak rental business. The building is red with white trim. There are many flags hanging out front and kayaks displayed everywhere.

*** As fair warning….. DO NOT UTILIZE YOUR GPS TO GET YOU TO THIS LOCATION. In good situations most GPS units do not recognize our address. To make matters worse, GPS units do not recognize detours. If your unit directs you to take an un-paved road, do not follow the directions given. Safely pull over to the side of the road and call our offices at 609-561-0024. Our highly trained staff is available to assist you :
