Traffic jams at Gandys Beach aren’t like the traffic jams found in the bustling, busy resorts that line the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey.
At Gandys Beach, traffic comes to halt when people cruising the town’s only road in golf carts — the favorite way to traverse Cove Road — stop to talk to each other.
Gandys Beach is as far removed as you can get from its counterparts on the state’s east coast that draw hordes of tourists each year.
There are only about 75 homes — about five of which are occupied year-round. Everyone has each other’s phone numbers. People still hang laundry out to dry. A weekend trip to the dump can sometimes turn into a group excursion. Wildlife — including eagles, hawks, turtles and horseshoe crabs — is everywhere.
