After introducing my 2020 dark-themed topo, some people wanted a light topo since I deleted the old "Map of the Pines HD" which just had too many errors. I agreed and introduced one at the end of 2023. Now, a year later, it's interesting that the dark 2020 topo is still much more popular, based on map usage stats.
These maps are very different: the 2020 dark topo has little trees and other landcover features, similar to the historic Cook topo but using modern data while the light topo adheres closely to the USGS legacy 24k topo style. The 2020 topo also has parcel boundaries when you zoom all the way in. Didn't put those on the 2023 topo because the USGS didn't do that and it would also make the map too cluttered. The 2020 topo also has green shading for public openspace, another thing that the USGS never did; the 2023 topo only shows open space boundaries, which are rather confusing.
But there's another big difference: I spent about 500 hours updating the unpaved roads on the 2023 topo, comparing them to the USGS legacy 24k topos. Unpaved roads from the legacy topos are shown in a different style than roads from other sources (such as aerials and LIDAR). I also added a number of roads from the legacy topos that aren't on the 2020 version. And the 2023 topo is just generally made from newer data.
Use the one you like, that's why they're here! But realize the 2023 version had the benefit of a lot of additional work and research. Compare the two versions here:

BTW, if you're interested in parcel and openspace boundaries, use the light and dark road maps in the PinesXT app, they have newer/better openspace data with green shading and show parcels through a wide zoom range. They only show unpaved roads that are on the legacy 24k topo's however.

Looking ahead... will be adding new light and dark topos that cover the whole Mid-Atlantic region later this year (these will take several months). They'll have a "modern" style that's different from either of the current topos. There are also new light and dark Mid-Atlantic road maps coming, work is currently in progress on those but I've temporarily shelved them to work on the new 1970 aerials.
