STATE WARNS ABOUT BEETLE-INFESTED SCENTED PINE CONES

Trenton - New Jersey consumers who have bought scented pine cones
originating from India should return them, a state official announced
Wednesday.
Agriculture Secretary Charles M. Kuperus warned that the pine cones
may contain wood-boring beetles that are harmful to pine trees.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a national recall of
scented pine cones sold in Target, Wal-Mart, JoAnn Fabrics, Lowe's,
Dollar Tree, Safeway, Frank's Nursery and K-mart stores. The pine
cones may have been sold individually or as part of potpourri.
Federal investigators recently found infested pine cones in stores in
nine states, including three Target stores in New Jersey. Those stores
are located in Deptford, Bound Brook and Middletown.
"While it's uncertain how these beetles would impact our native
pines, we don't want to take any chances," Kuperus said in a news
release.
If consumers cannot return the pine cones to the stores where they
were purchased, they should freeze them for at least two days or
double bag them, tying the bags securely, before throwing them away in
the trash.
