From the Daily National Intelligencer, Washington DC, on Friday, July 20, 1827:

(this was a listing of various accidents that happened on July 4, 1827)

Another -- On the celebration of the 4th inst. at Batsto Furnace, in Burlington county, N.J. by the accidental discharge of the cannon, John Pearson was thrown a distance of several feet from its mouth, by which his right side and arm was dreadfully wounded; and John Donnelly had the fingers of his left hand blown off, his arm crippled, and his face much injured. Both of these men were employed at the furnace, as brick moulders. Pearson is not expected to survive.
