    Snow coming next week?

Snow is coming tomorrow night... but not for the Pines. https://www.weather.gov/media/phi/current_briefing.pdf

Badfish has not visited the forum since 2017, so we may never know. ;)

    Backyard Gardens

Yes it's far-fetched. Maybe this is a hot issue in Arizona, but I've never heard of it in New Jersey. I'll be a little more direct this time: previous threads on climate change have gotten out of hand and ended with people getting suspended. A statement like "the insanity of the climate cabal...

NJ bag ban causing more plastic use

Didn't realize there was a difference - Joe Canals. Think I've seen it at another store too, but this one definitely has the strict policy, was carded there within the past month https://www.google.com/maps/place/Joe+Canal's+Liquor/@39.424516,-75.039285,18z/

...And you've been here long enough to know better than to fan the flames in a thread like this. :D

Never heard of such a thing. But since you're new here, I should point out that similar threads about climate change have not ended well....

NJ bag ban causing more plastic use

There's a popular chain of liquor stores here called Canal's. They have a strict policy of requiring ID, regardless of age. I don't know why, but at 74 that just bothers me. I complain, but it's not the clerks fault so not going to pick on them. They just shrug their shoulders and say it's their...

Florida weather right here this weekend, around 60 degrees on Saturday! :D

    Tar Kiln Locations?

This is all I found, probably not worth the effort and the maps are pretty crude. Some fun memories though. Years ago I remember throwing a bunch of these maps away because they were falling apart. That map of Byrne in the center is funny, it's the old map of Lebanon State Forest with a cheap...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

(A bit off-topic) This got me thinking, somewhere I have a crate full of old maps that includes the paper maps for State Forests and Parks in the Pines, they probably go back 20 to 30 years. Would be an interesting project to georeference them and stitch together into a map for the whole region. :)

    Tar Kiln Locations?

You might be right about calling it a tar kiln trail if it's next to tar kilns. :) But the Belleplain trail guide you linked to above is definitely for the tarkiln trail in my first screenshot above. I remember seeing that on the paper Belleplain State Forest maps you could get at the visitor...

    Tar Kiln Locations?

Unless I'm not understanding, something is odd there. AFAIK this is the correct location of Tarkiln Bogs (also shown on the USGS 24k topo) and the trail, which is about 5 miles from the link you posted. Your location is in Peaslee WMA and not Belleplain State Forest, which is what that trail...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I also seem to recall a map that the Wharton Superintendent created before 2015, there's probably an old thread buried in the slag heap. :D But seriously, we had a member who was taking GIS courses and wrote about helping him map Wharton. Didn't something grow out of that? I thought the 2015 map...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I thought this was pretty unreasonable (being polite) in the old plan. At least the new plan calls for signage, doesn't it? https://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.60187949654665&lng=-74.83522910278319&z=14&type=dep2015&gpx=

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

Just to be clear, all I posted was a link to a file on the Pinelands Commission website. I never even looked before but just did now. You're right, it looks terrible.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

According to our earlier discussion, this is the composite map, available from the commission website. https://www.nj.gov/pinelands/home/meetings/documents/Wharton%20State%20Forest%20general%20boundary%201997%20USGS%20topoquads11x17.pdf

HERE maps - possible changes coming

Originally had not planned to do it, but I went ahead and made a mobile version of the hybrid map. My concern had been that the original hybrid map is about 56gb and I didn't want to devote that much space to another version. The original is compressed as .png images, which typically provides...

    Pine Barren History Shorts

I don't know anything about Van Note's, but when I lived in Central NY near Lake Ontario, people would say "camp" where we might say "cabin" or just "home" around here. For example, John Smith might say "I'll be spending the weekend at my camp on Lake Onieda" and it might be refered to as "John...

Introducing my 2023 traditional USGS-style topo

Finally getting around to writing some documentation for my 2023 topo, should be online before too long. In the meantime, this map legend might be of interest - specifically note the difference in the style of the roads and trails that were traced from the USGS 24k topo maps. I used that...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

Haven't seen this before... "Other state lands such as Bass River State Forest in Ocean County already have taken this route and defined maps where drivers may legally take their vehicles"
