    Island Beach

46er; thanks for the link. Yes, that's the project one of the birders told me. I couldn't remember it. There was one spotted today at A7. It was sitting on a fence post. There is a picture of it on eBird.

    Island Beach

Yesterday, I made a trip down to IBSP, to do a little surf fishing and see if I can find the Snowy Owl that had been spotted there the past few days. I had no luck in those cases. At times, in helping to locate fish, you look for working birds hovering over schools of bait fish. To find snowy...

    Along The Batsto

On second thought of hauling logs downstream. I had noticed a faint image of an old road running parallel to the river south of the RR tracks, and one going directly toward the cedars. You can only see them at this time of the years, They could have been used for hauling lumber. Also there...

    Along The Batsto

Back on Thursday, I hiked downstream along the banks of the Batsto River on the right side starting near the railroad bridge. I mainly wanted to check out the old growth cedars along its banks. In one area, I came upon several large ones. Measuring 4 1/2 feet up from the ground, I measured the...

    Rusty Waters

Several years ago while viewing aerials, I noticed an orange colored area along a major river in the pines. An investigation was required. Upon arrival it appears to be an old iron ore bog with groundwater coming to the surface forming a good size orange color swamp. Several small streams...

    Savanna Peace

This past week I make a trip to the pines to check out a savanna I've had visited before. I followed a road that leads you into the savanna that stays flooded year round. Knowing that, and not having a pair of hip boots, I put on my waders that I use for surf fishing along IBSP. I followed...

    Seasons are a Changin'

Al, as I walked down the road I had to get around 20 water hazards, however it was quite easy to do so. I didn't have go into the water far before it was up to the top of my boots. I believe many of those puddles are at least two feet deep. The third picture in the original post is a side...

    Seasons are a Changin'

Being treated with some early fall weather on Friday, I explored the area east of Route 206 about 1/2 mile south of Atsion Lake. I walked down a road for about 1 1/2 miles, loaded with water hazards with go arounds that were probably created many years ago. Looking at the change in the foliage...

    Duckenhat

How about Ducking Hat Swamp. I found that on the PDF Map for Four Mile Springs Preserve. Looking at other maps, it appears that Burnt Bridge Branch passed though that area. This is the only info I found that comes close to what you are asking. Ron

    Pomerania

I did a search on the Net. I got one hit that Pomerania is located in Atlantic County, but it did not know where. I got another hit under Ancestry.com that listed all the municipalities of Atlantic County. It mentioned Pomerania/Galloway Twp. Also there was a immigrate from a area of Prussia...

    Pine Barren Flora

Bob. I found a large moth in my backyard this morning. That took me back to the picture of the caterpillar you had posted. With a little search on the net, that caterpillar appears to be Cecropia hyalophora a member of the family Saturnidae, the giant silk moths. What I saw was Antheraea...

    Pine Barren Flora

I don't know about Penn State Forest, but I read that the CCC Camp at Bass River was active until 1942. They were administered by the US Army. Then again, there was a major 5-day military maneuver that took place at Penn State Forest in 1941. It was to simulate an invasion by a foreign power...

    Pine Barren Flora

Bob; All great pictures. Your out doing me. The picture of the stream appears to be either the Cook Branch or Westecunk Creek across from the bombing range. Both have stony bottoms that gives me the appearance of trout streams in the pines.

    Out Bogging

Redneck; that's a good suggestion. A bridge. The structure is near the Batsto River just down stream from where it goes under Carranza Road. The steel structure may be placed right in the water. The river is not wide there.

    Out Bogging

Thanks 46er. That's probably what it was used for. I didn't think of that.

    Out Bogging

Al, I totally agree what you said. It was built as a solid structure to hold a lot of weight. It appears it was built by hunters, but I'm not sure it was to be used to sleep on. There is no other debris in the area. It's located not much more than 100-125 yards from a hardtop road.

    Out Bogging

Here's another view of the structure. It has a metal frame. I felt it was a known structure built by a group of hunters. Maybe to place deer on it.

    Out Bogging

With the heat of today, I explored a bog that has easy access from a well know road in Wharton. There are two small bogs with some separation between the two. The second one has a more defined stream along its edge with signs of cranberries. Lophiola aurea (Gold-crest) was the predominant...

    Overcast Day at Long Causeway

I had to get a 'piney fix' today. If the temps were under 90 degrees, I'm going to the pines even though there was a chance of rain. With all the rain we been having, I thought that the Long Causeway Bogs would be good easy place to roam. I've been here quite offend, at times to pick up...

    Just Tootling Along

This morning I made a trip to the pines to revisit the area in my earlier 'tootling' post. As I expected, a countless number of flowers were present. Being away for three weeks, I missed the prime time for two significant plants, Narthecium americanum and Tofieldia racemosa. With so many...
