    Plant ID

deleted- Hawkin beat me to it! .:) PancoastDrifter, If you walk the bank along the shallow cove off of the lowest bog at Stafford Foge you will find tons of sundews. I've taken quite a few nice pics there.

A Great Day In The Pines

A similar break in the dam at Webbs Mills coincidentally occurred while I was there a few years back. Wonders never seem to cease, do they? There is no keeping up with the beavers however. They have nothing but time on their hands (paws?) and are very good at it. There is only one solution. The...

? About Difference in NJ Stones

I’ve been following the sandstone/ironstone threads closely, hoping to clear up some of my own misconceptions, and appreciate the knowledgeable input. A nagging question of my own remains. I’ve always held that the bog iron ore that was raised from the wetlands to be melted in the furnaces is...

    Bird Hunting Question in Greenwood

I hear that. I did far more hunting than I did shooting. Another common situation with me was for one to flush, completely surprising and shocking me, then as my shotgun is held loosely at my side while I wonder if I had a shot, a second bird flushes from the same spot, leaving me just as...

    Bird Hunting Question in Greenwood

Scott, I appreciate the additional insight. My father lives with me and also happens to be 83. We share a similar temperament and argue on an almost daily basis, but I quickly back down. I feel at that age you have earned the right to be a bit on the ornery side! And Mike is right about the...

Pentagon Accused of Starting Warren Grove Fire

I had a bit of experience with Phoenix when I was on the LEH Environmental Commission, and it wasn’t good experience. I like the claim that they lost 460 acres to the fire. Where exactly did these acres go?

    Bird Hunting Question in Greenwood

I wouldn’t be so quick to bad mouth people for discussing a problem. That’s how successful solutions to problems begin. Anything less is likely to result in spinning of wheels. The “with us or against us” mentality is even worse when it comes to solutions.

    Bird Hunting Question in Greenwood

I’ve wondered the same thing about native quail that I have about bluebirds. Perhaps these are not species which are in decline from a “natural” population but rather are returning to historic numbers that existed before large expanses of forest were opened up for agriculture, logging for...

Pentagon Accused of Starting Warren Grove Fire

I never got this either. I understand the need to practice bomb dropping and air-to-ground fire, but how much training is needed to eject a flare?

    Interesting firearms stuff

My views have changed over the years as well. Growing up in very urban Paterson, my only environmental education was the Wonderful Word of Disney every Sunday night. My only exposure to firearms was criminal use of them. I ended up not only very anti-hunting but also anti-gun. Then while at...

    Interesting firearms stuff

I'm not a hard core NRA type either. All my hunting rifles load from the front. Assault rifles, 1776 style! But I do firmly believe that the 2nd amendment was intended to protect the average citizen from a central government that becomes increasingly tyrannical, rather than protecting my hunting...

    Interesting firearms stuff

What part is not true? Automatic weapons require a federal license, which is not easily acquired. Semi-automatic weapons are generally legal, with a few exceptions related to magazine capacity. The difference between the semi-auto “assault-style” weapons and the semi-auto hunting rifles and...

Kayaking the Upper Great Egg Harbor River

I’m canoeing from Pennypot to Weymouth on Monday, in order to research the trip for a public trip we are leading later in the summer. I’ve never paddled above Pennypot but have heard that it isn’t for those who do not like the challenge of thick brush and portages.

Readings show Four Corners marker off

I remember back when I had to take a surveying class as a requirement for my forestry degree and the professor spent one whole class just going over all the factors that resulted in many of our original surveys being so far off. Between the long-term problems that were inherent in metes and...

    Structure at White's Bogs

Is there any chance these ruins were of an old water pumping station? From what I can tell from the vegetation in the photo, it is in a freshwater wetland, which wouldn’t be the preferred place for a non-water powered sawmill, unless it was on the site of an older mill which was adapted to steam...

    Forked River Mountain Annual Cleanup

The meeting location alternates between Wells Mills and the Lacey Municipal building, depending on what part of the tract is being cleaned that year, but lunch is always on the mountain. Grilled tubes of meat by-products, but very yummy after a morning of hard work!
