    Outrageous Example of Poaching

I realize that this has nothing to do with the Pine Barrens proper, but since we have so many endangered and sensitive species, and since poaching occurs in our state, I wanted to share this article (via YouTube through The Weather Channel):

    Nor'easter

It wouldn't be so bad to get an inch or so of rain, we need it. I hate the idea of the leaves being blown off the trees before we have a chance to enjoy the fall splendor for a little while. Seemed to have happened the past few years.

    Morning Hike

Hi Glenn, I believe that the others are correct about it not being the Sourlands. If it were Sourland Mountain, you would see a lot of other ridges and formations around it. The Sourlands stretch about 20 miles and go through Hunterdon, a bit of Mercer, and some of Somerset. If you could see...

    Out Seeing Stuff

You lucky dog, that is a pine snake! Beautiful specimen too! BTW, you did not tug at him to pose him for a shot. The butterfly that you photographed is called a red spotted purple. I sometimes see them 'puddle clubbing'; sipping at puddles, animal dung or remains to get the sodium that...

Possible Mountain Lion Sighting in Princeton

This is more in Ben's neck of the woods than in the Pines, but I thought that this would be of interest. I know that lions have been discussed here several times over the years. Interesting if true...

    Northern brown snake?

Great find! I believe that the faint ring around its neck suggests that it is a juvenile. I know that juvie brown snakes have the light ring as well, and both are of the same genus (Storeria).

Why can’t the snakes cross the road

As much as I like to keep my faith in humans and look for the good in people, the thought of people stealing and selling wildlife and intentionally killing helpless living things really disturbs me.

Why can’t the snakes cross the road

As a teacher, amateur field herper and fellow ophidiophile, I feel your passion for pine snakes and all other serpentes in NJ. I often have students in class who are fearful of snakes, and I always take the time to share with them, as well as anyone else who would listen, lessons about the...

    Pa. Protecting Timber Rattlesnake

Coincidentally, I was speaking to someone this weekend who works as a naturalist in the Poconos, and when I asked about timber sightings up there, her response was that "there was a healthier population on the Jersey side" (of the Water Gap). Also...

    Bad accident in Chats tonight

About 7 years ago my fiancé and I stopped on the side of 539, at Webb's Mill, to check out the bog. When we got back in the car, I was using my sideview (we were continuing in the same direction that we were parked) to pull out on the road and something told me to look ahead of my car before...
