Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

I don't think we've had anything here yet. Going out for a morning walk now, just in case it's raining later. :)

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Updated summary this morning. But there seems to be a lot of variability in the actual forecast. For example, my local forecast calls for 3/4 to 1 inch of rain, but if I go North, around the center of Wharton, they forecast 1 to 2 inches. Both of these forecasts are only calling for 20 mph...

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

It's dry at my place but I've certainly seen worse. I have a creek on my land and am down there every day, so I'm pretty aware of local conditions. But just yesterday I was thinking that we're right on the cusp of foliage emerging and that will suck up a lot of water, so we could be headed for...

    Years Ago Today

Yes - that is it, I see the duck pond is still there too! I just assumed my receipt was from Medford, since I went there pretty often back then. But it says Lamberti's Philadelphia. I worked in Philadelphia, but not quite remembering where Lamberti's was.

    Years Ago Today

Haha, yeah those were busy times for me, I ate out a lot. Sometimes dinner at home with the family, but my daughter had just graduated from Shawnee and we all had our own schedules. I tapered off on restaurants after retiring and now I only eat out while travelling or visiting family. Like you...

    Years Ago Today

Opened up my copy of Beck the other day and this 25 year old receipt fell out. Tried to compare it to current prices, but looks like Lamberti's no longer exists.... is this them? Couldn't find a "fish of the day" but the cheapest fish meal on their menu is $24 now and a tossed salad is $7.00...

    boydsmaps in the post-NJGIN era

If anyone was wondering, I just renewed the boydsmaps server lease through the beginning of April 2026. Had considered adding another terabyte of disk space but actually, my current disk is a bit larger than I thought, there's still about a terabyte of free space. When I fill that up...

While We Were Sleeping, Very Bad Things Happened

No idea how NJDEP does things, but I've been working on a large regional map based on USGS road data. Current USGS data is based on TIGER shapefiles from the US Census Bureau. This was originally very crude data, only intended to help census-takers find houses. So, if there was a little winding...

    Fire in Wharton

They mentioned this fire on CNN this morning and said it is now 80% contained.

    Fire in Wharton

Actually, I think that is the original NDEP MAP. At least it has North at the top and the roads don't look like yellow toothpaste (like the new one). :D

    Fire in Wharton

Looking at all my topo maps, the only one that shows any kind of stream at your blue dashed line is the (so-called) 1949 USGS topo. That seems to match the 1930's aerials in your screenshot very well, but there's no name. The older topos don't show a stream there, the 24k legacy doesn't show it...

    Fire in Wharton

That's an interesting observation. I don't have an opinion one way or the other, but thought it would be interesting to do a quick (very unscientific!) search for threads about fires in March and April. Only went back to 2013 and I'm sure I missed some. My general take-away from this was that...

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

That's interesting, because the wind hasn't been bad this morning in Atlantic County. Was up early, went to the shore and back on errands. There were gusts on and off - and they felt cold - but not very intense in terms of wind speed. But the day is still young... :)

Porch Pirate Criminal Network Stole Thousands of iPhones

You often hear about "porch pirates", but this is really crazy! :siren: "Thirteen members of an international network worked to steal FedEx shipments of iPhones from people's porches, using automated scripts to scrape data from FedEx tracking systems and also bribing corrupt employees from...

Weird low frequency rumbling yesterday afternoon

Maybe, but what I (and others, apparently) heard was definitely earlier than 6:00 PM... _________- "On Monday, the Maryland navy base located near the Chesapeake Bay had posted to its Facebook page that it was holding test flights from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m."

Weird low frequency rumbling yesterday afternoon

Definitely not the wind, since I was outside. It reminded me of Mark's posts from 2013 - that is exactly how I would describe this event - 12 years later!

Weird low frequency rumbling yesterday afternoon

Did you hear/feel it? I was outside in the woods and there were multiple examples of this sometime between 3 to 5 PM. Thought it was very weird at the time, not like a sonic boom, it was an extended very low frequency rumbling that lasted a number of seconds each time. Really could not relate it...
