Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

This forecast shows most of the rain in the South. Was also wondering about that "few brief tornadoes" comment in the earlier post. Looks unlikely for most of the pines and only a 2% chance for the rest of our region... More info here: https://digital.weather.gov

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Rain on the way tomorrow night... forecast says 1/4 to 1/2 inch in Wharton, 1/2 to 3/4 inch down in my part of Atlantic County. Looks like just a rain event, without any strong winds.

    Cape May County Explorations

I think North-Up and Track-Up both have legitimate uses. But in the case of the nature preserve map, I just don't see any reason to rotate it 90 degrees with East at the top. If it's a case where the map is short and wide but it has to fit in a tall, skinny space on a printed page, that makes...

    Cape May County Explorations

I was trying to reconcile that small parcel with the website that said the preserve was over 800 acres and just got more confused by the map on their site. Then I looked at the compass on the map... East is at the top! Why would they do that? Just to confuse people? The map is basically square...

    Cape May County Explorations

I've been there, although many years ago. Always thought that name was curious, never even considered that "Lizard's Tail" was a plant! https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/lizard-tail-swamp-preserve/...

    Are you onboard for this?

They really need to make this kind of thing easier and more obvious. Of course, there's also the question of whether you can trust them. But let's say they're trustworthy and actually don't share any of your data. Then, they get hacked and now your data is available to any bad guy who can afford...

    Are you onboard for this?

My 2023 car has all those sensors and alerts and yeah, the braking alerts can be very startling and usually there's no apparent reason. But it's all optional (AFAIK) and you only get the alerts when the assistive options are enabled (like adaptive cruise control). But it's all very confusing...

    Are you onboard for this?

That battle was already lost without a fight. License plate scanners are everywhere, there are businesses that lease them and even small towns have signed up, installing stationary ones and also putting them on police cars where they constantly harvest data from every car they pass. And if...

    Are you onboard for this?

"New cars must beep and display a warning if the driver exceeds the speed limit by at least ten mph." I don't think it would be much of an issue for me if it only happens at 10mph above the limit. It would be rare for me to go that fast. I generally stay pretty close to the limit, have never...

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

According to this map, the Pines will be be just about the coolest place in the whole Northeast this week.

Abandoned mansion on private island being demolished

Took me a few minutes to figure out where this is because I don't think it's actually part of Toms River like the article says. I think it's here: https://boydsmaps.com/#19.00/40.000262/-74.081916/njgin2020/0.00/0.00 https://boydsmaps.com/#17.00/40.000262/-74.081916/pines2023/0.00/0.00...

Saw Mill Ruins Near Hawkins Bridge

Are you talking about an online map on my site? If so, I believe my 2020 map is the only one that matches your description. It's a dark-themed topo and it does show historical POI in purple, but that sawmill is not on the map. My old Garmin maps could be viewed with dark colors if you selected...

Saw Mill Ruins Near Hawkins Bridge

I think you must be remembering a very old Garmin map? I looked as far back as 2012 and didn't see that sawmill on any of my maps. However, when I made my first map of the Pines around 2008, Guy gave me a select list of POI's to include and I recall there were some sawmills on it. Can't find...

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Apparently, it could change rather quickly. Note the "rapid onset drought risk" shaded area that includes Southern NJ. :siren:

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Haven't gone out yet, but looks completely dry and I didn't hear any rain all night. [edit]Apparently there was some light rain overnight. Just enough to partially moisten the ground, at least it cut down on the dust. But it will quickly dry out in the heat of the day.

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Not a drop here either. One big system passed to the North and another to the South. There's more on the way though.

Wet Forest - Formerly Known as Dry Forest

Warm out there in the sun today, but a nice breeze was refreshing, especially in the shade. :) May get a little rain tomorrow night, looks like the severe weather will be North and West of the Pines. It is certainly not anywhere near drought conditions around my place, still very respectable...

    Gritty in Wharton

"... the important thing is, he's reached such a high level of recognition that even people who don't follow hockey probably know him and love him." First time I ever heard of him and not loving him. ;) Didn't watch the video, but was it filmed on public land (like a state forest)? If so, I...
