State Park Service "First Day 2018" hikes

Sounds great. 48 is a pretty large group for a hike, isn't it? But I see Wharton posted a picture of their Atsion mansion tour and hike, and it looks like about 60 people showed up for that one. (Which was run by Outdoor Club of SJ so I suppose a lot of them were OCSJ members.) When we finally...

State Park Service "First Day 2018" hikes

Well, we did it. About 6.5 miles in the West Pine Plains, 3 hours, 14 people with lots of layers on, temperatures probably between 10 and 18 degrees, with some wind. A really good hike leader who pointed out interesting plants and other features. One injury where a person slipped and fell hard...

State parks celebrate new year with ‘First Day Hike’

Looking at the First Day Hikes web page, I see 6 events were already canceled, including the Batsto mountain bike ride.

State parks celebrate new year with ‘First Day Hike’

It's not too late to pick an event and go. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/state-park-service-first-day-2018-hikes.12401/ Bass River SF's event is at West Pine Plains, starting at NJ-72 and the eastern boundary of Coyle Field, 7 miles, daytime forecast high temperature is "near 18"...

609 area code is getting an "overlay"

Thanks for the reminder. I heard about this but didn't know the schedule. Time to start getting people to put their area code 609 before the 7 digit phone number on signs, etc. Here is the official announcement and information: https://www.nationalnanpa.com/pdf/PL_508.pdf It also ends...

New snake species hiding in plain sight

I think you are allowed to handle a snake in NJ if you have a hat like that young woman in the picture in the article.

New snake species hiding in plain sight

I think it's a really bad idea for most people (including me!) to handle snakes, but I've never heard of a law against it. Taking a snake from state-managed land home to keep as a pet, for example, would be against the law, I'm pretty sure.

State Park Service "First Day 2018" hikes

There's a guy I see occasionally at Bass River SF who has this really neat bicycle with super fat tires. He said he bought it just for the trails and sand roads of the Pinelands. It looks nothing like a mountain bike. I'll try to get a picture next time I see him.

State Park Service "First Day 2018" hikes

If you're looking for something to do outside bright and early on New Year's Day morning, with a group of warmly dressed mostly friendly people (sure you are!), there are "24 guided hikes, 2 mountain bike rides, and 1 horseback ride" planned for the state parks and forests this New Years day...

Free 2018 Pinelands wall calendars are available

The new 2018 Pinelands National Reserve wall calendars are out. I got mine today. They are very nice, with great pictures. (Below is a part of the cover. This is a scan - the original is much better quality.) The Pinelands Commission produces these, and they are free. You can't get them online...

    Earthquake

USGS now says it was magnitude 4.1, not 5.1. For the record. https://www.usgs.gov/news/magnitude-41-earthquake-near-dover-delaware

    Island Beach

These are 2 different things, aren't they? Banding is just a thin metal or plastic loop with an identification number on it. I doubt they bother the bird much. I saw a video of them banding young ospreys at Forsythe. But radio collars and GPS trackers are surely different, with battery and...

    Camp Site Reservations

Oops... Not going to happen December 4th. Still doing walk-ins only, no advance reservations. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/camping_reserv_update.html "We are experiencing a delay in the launch of our new camping reservation system"... No target date now, just that 24 hour notice...

Episode 73-Pinelands Flora with Bernie Isaacson

Episode 75 is out, topic is "Pinelands history & legends". I'm not up to that one yet, but I peaked and I think they improved the audio.

    GPS recommendations

I wondered about that. I'm on my second Magellan eXplorist GPS unit, the first having been damaged when I slipped on ice and fell on it. I do like it. I suppose I've gotten used to its quirks, and I really rely on it when out there. But Magellan no longer links to the outdoor line of products...

When is Franklin Parker closed for deer hunting?

FPP is Special Area Zone 68, and it follows the season dates in Regulation Set #6, although hunters have to contact NJCF for permission, areas open to hunting, and rules. 12/4 through 12/9 is Six-day Firearm Season (for all zones) and I'm guessing that's when they would close it, although I...

    Pinelands Commission Resolution: MAP 2.0

When I read the article linked above ("Off-roaders no longer have free reign in this huge forest"), it sounds like they are saying: now that we have a map, nobody will ride through and damage sensitive areas of the Pinelands. Like: Problem solved, because we have a map. Really?

Hunter Fatally Shoots Woman He Mistook For A Deer

Yes NJ allows hunting up to 1/2 hour after sunset. I was walking in the woods yesterday until around 3:30pm - a full hour before sunset - and it was starting to get dark in there. I expect it would be very dark in that 1/2 hour after sunset. I think the articles say he wasn't charged yet - I...
