    Camp Site Reservations

FYI, http://www.njparksandforests.org/camping_reserv_update.html has changed and now it says the state's new campsite reservation system is scheduled to go live on Monday December 4th at 9:00am. (Previously it said "December 1st or sooner". Oh well, close enough I guess.) From what I read, the...

DEP Launches Trail Tracker Smart Device Tool

A few more off-trail finds, reasons to stay on trail: Rusty old strands of barbed wire (that stuff scared me more than the other things), broken glass from dumped windows, used baby diapers, used pregnancy test kits (not kidding, really), full doggie bags (not the food kind - from the other...

DEP Launches Trail Tracker Smart Device Tool

Snakes. Spiders. Ticks. Chiggers. Hunter's snares. Unmarked private property lines. Etc. We are not lost - We are locationally deficient, and directionally challenged. (From a Clive Cussler book, I think)

DEP Launches Trail Tracker Smart Device Tool

Speaking of navigating and/or getting lost in the Pinelands - I've always wondered why there are no road name signs at the unpaved road intersections. Someone told me there once were, but they always got stolen. True?

DEP Launches Trail Tracker Smart Device Tool

Especially true during hunting season. And don't dress in camo or dark colors. And keep dogs on leash and kids nearby. There are many responsible, safe, careful, sober hunters out there, but it's the other ones I worry about.

DEP Launches Trail Tracker Smart Device Tool

Does anyone know how/if this works? It seems to me Trail Tracker needs live internet access to work, but that's the PC version and I'm not sure how the cell phone app works. On the web site, the intro/"About" popup says to follow a link for PDF maps "before visiting areas of limited cell...

    Frost may be coming

That's interesting. But I think it was a different event. Through OCSJ (Outdoor Club of South Jersey), and it looks like they had more time to do it. Maybe walking, not running? I'm not sure who organized the one tomorrow - I read about it at ultrarunning.com and...

    Frost may be coming

It wasn't bad out there today. The wind gusts were strong, but it didn't seem that cold to me. The cold comes tonight. But there were plenty of people camping for the weekend at Bass River State Forest. Some RVs, most of the small "lean-to" shelters were taken, and a few brave folks in tents...

    RAIN?

2.5 inches of rain, according to the above excellent map, on Lake Absegami in Bass River SF = how many gallons of water? Anybody? (Lake is said to be 67 acres) I come up with 4.5 million gallons of water falling into the lake. The spillway was completely dry last week, and water was pouring...

    Batsto River Closure

Maybe what they saw was a geocache. I've pulled some from state-controlled lands that would be considered very suspicious, like a small round container covered in camouflage tape, or an actual military ammunition box. Plenty of stories at geocaching.com about police or bomb squads being called...

Waterford Township Cleanup Day 10-14-17 08:00

I only found the link... I don't know anything about it. But the web page said there were "tax papers, bank statements, small appliances – an elderly couple’s entire life." If so, identifying whose property it was would be easy, but that doesn't show who dumped it. I'm guessing cases like this...

Waterford Township Cleanup Day 10-14-17 08:00

If you want to see what those Pine Barrens Clean-Up participants accomplished last year (2016), take a look at the pictures here: http://lostinthepines.com/getlost/?p=233 Amazing. Frightening amounts of trash, all cleaned up.

PPA Rallying The Troops For Commission Appointment

It kind of looks to me like maybe Winslow Twp is the only part of Camden County that is actually within the Pinelands National Reserve and/or the state-designated Pinelands Preservation area?

    NJ Trail Tracker

Yes I've seen signs like that (the triangle part) at Estell Manor (Atlantic County Park). But I'm pretty sure that's for wide trails, sand roads. Mult-use trails. Never for single-track MTB trails. Wharton, for example, does "not recommend" hiking on its MTB trails. So the question is whether...

    NJ Trail Tracker

On the maps, that trail looks seriously twisty/curvey. It's hard to tell, but at least some parts seem to be single-track. Walking on a single-track twisty MTB trail would be considered dangerous, so it would be discouraged. Doesn't mean you aren't allowed to walk, but stay alert and be prepared...

Skit Branch bridge closed - advisory from Wharton

I'm thinking what happened is maybe something like this. ------ (Apology to ecampbell for trashing your photo.) (Truck is CC BY 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons, by D'oh Boy (Mark Holloway))

    NJ Trail Tracker

Thanks for the link. That's really interesting. It's an ESRI mapping application with a State overlay showing trails. You can click on a trail for details. (Sometimes, though, fill-in-the-blanks from a database doesn't work too well. Joe's Trail at Bass River SF: "color is Unmarked, and is...

    Public Service Announcement

Funny you should mention the squirrels ... I have also had close calls recently. They dash partly across the road, then seem to quickly decide they can't make it and turn around and dash back. I have also see the remains of some that didn't make it. Haven't hit one yet though.

Skit Branch bridge closed - advisory from Wharton

I see Batona pink "turn here" blazes on the back of that sign. But that bridge isn't part of the Batona trail, right? I wonder if the person who drove the 'suspect vehicle' over the bridge even knew what happened. And if he did, what was the second word out of his mouth when he realized his...
