    Fire in Wharton?

Reports as of 9am Sat that the fire is 100% contained, with un-burned fuel pockets well away from containment lines. All campgrounds are open, but trails nearby are still closed, including Batona. I assume this means just the part of Batona near the fire area is closed...

    Fire in Wharton?

There's ash particles falling all over. My car was parked as Bass River SF all day and it's got white streaks all over, and when I left I could see the particles, like very fine snow. Look for the possibility of an awesomely weird sunset tonight.

    Pinelands Commission Resolution: MAP 2.0

Might be overthinking this. I keep some USGS Topo Quads in PDF on my PC. I just looked at a few of them and they all have different years. I got them all from the same place, and I thought they were the latest. I find it easier to believe they just grabbed the quads they had and glued them...

    Any Photobucket users?

Not sure who you are talking about, but perhaps this will help... Photobucket had a "Plus" account level, that you paid for - but much less than the $400/year they want now - that provided more storage and no ads. For those accounts, hosting photos will still work until Dec 31, 2018 as long as...

Verizon closing down its e-mail service

Just to clarify: AOL will still have free email accounts, with access via web or smartphone. No change and no charge for people accessing their AOL email that way. What changed - and some think Verizon influenced this - is that the "AOL Desktop" software - a program you can install on your PC...

Harrisville Lake tree removal and grading

Thanks for that link. It was a very interesting read. The link in the article to the US Army Corps of Engineers web site with the National Inventory of Dams (NID) still works, and it says the data was now updated to 2016 (the article is from 2015, and then the data was from 2013). Here is the...

Harrisville Lake tree removal and grading

I read that dams are classified as I, II, III, and IV based on their hazard potential. Failure of a Class I dam could cause loss of life or extensive property damage; Classs II failure could cause significant property damage; Class III is low hazard potential, and if a Class IV dam fails nobody...

Pinelands Commission on off-road motor vehicles at Wharton

I saw this on the front page of the 7/8-14 Pine Barrens Tribune: "Pinelands Commission Poised to Curb Use of Off-Road Vehicles in Protected Areas". http://pinebarrenstribune.com/pinelands-commission-poised-to-curb-use-of-offroad-vehicles-in-protected-a-p1172-165.htm I'm not sure if this is news...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

Speaking of signs... I did litter pickup today at one of the just-opened sites and snagged from the ground one of the other signs you might have seen in person or on the news: "Advisory: These facilities are closed until further notice..." Looks like cheap ink-jet printing (the ink is running in...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

My apologies to all photojournalists of the world, and especially that one, who went up in a small plane because he had a hunch the Gov might be on the beach, and shot those with a "long-range lens" from about 1000' above IBSP.

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

Speaking of Island Beach State Park, ha ha: They got pictures of the Governor and his family on the beach. PHOTOS: Christie, family soak up sun on N.J. beach he closed to public. Do those look like drone photos to you too? Favorite quote: "He [the Governor] did not get any sun. He had a...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

I suppose it's an opportunity to learn about non-state public property in or near the Pinelands. This includes New Jersey Conservation Foundation properties, which are not State-controlled, and "many" of which are open to the public - especially Franklin Parker Preserve. Also federal, county...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

A letter to the editor, Pine Barrens Tribute, about the Harrisiville Lake/Pond tree cutting: http://pinebarrenstribune.com/letter-to-the-editor-furious-with-tree-removal-at-harrisville-lake-p1164-117.htm The writer seems a little upset...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

It's unbelievabe. They say they are going to have State Park Police go through the campgrounds this morning and evict everybody. I was at Bass River yesterday afternoon and the campgrounds were filling up fast for the holiday weekend - almost everything was reserved. That's 176 tent/trailer...

Properties on the record that don't exist?

Thanks... I'm always looking for new sources. I have seen njparcels.com but I can't seem to find a way to search by block and lot number. I also 'discovered' that Monmouth County's site has the entire state loaded, unlike other counties. Here are some I use: Burlington County...

Properties on the record that don't exist?

Sorry, I probably can't do that now. While the reference data I'm using is all public, I was forwarded some information and I'm not sure how the originator would feel about me having it, let alone spreading it. Thanks. I did read about your amazing work, and even loaded MOBAC, but the data...

Properties on the record that don't exist?

I agree. It's hard to believe. But this is the Pinelands! As people have reminded me, they used to give away property deeds as door-prizes. There are whole high-density neighborhoods on the map that never existed (see the area at CR-563 and NJ-72 for example). So why not add a few non-existing...

Properties on the record that don't exist?

I just started on a project that involves maps and the property tax database, in various Pinelands areas. I've come across some properties in the tax database that I am unable to find on any map, and for which the state GIS department doesn't have geometry. I thought to ask the far-more...
