    Mutant Piney Burley Tobacco

I changed the spark plug once and I clean the air filter every once in a great while. Cast iron trans housing with bronze gears. They really do last forever. All American-made back then when they were based in Troy NY. I bought it new right after we moved in 1984 and it became popular with...

    Mutant Piney Burley Tobacco

Yes, I use Osmocote on my tomatoes and peppers as a side dress just as the plants start setting fruit. It's a very slow release and it has never burned anything. My vegetable and tobacco garden prep is the same every year. At the end of the season I yank out all of my plants. In April, I rake...

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

In my limited experience with yeast, I got off flavors. One year I didn’t add enough sugar, but I did add the yeast. It was the driest wine I ever made. I have been making wine for close to 30 years now and I just rely on the sludge in the bottom of the bucket to get my yeast action.

    Mutant Piney Burley Tobacco

I've been growing my own Burley tobacco for about 5 or 6 years now and I make my own loose leaf chew with it. This year, I tired a Kelly Burley variety from a guy known as The Tobacco Guy on Etsy. The germination in trays in my window sills was probably 100% and the plants were very vigorous...

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

Well, I would be remiss if I didn't make this post today. :) It's wine season and I was at Gino's in Hammonton this morning stocking up on Barbera. 36 gallons again this year. No yeast, just the sludge in the bottom of the buckets. 36 gallons seems like the magic number for the last few years...

    Chigged!

I agree Guy, knee-high boots would have helped. My mistake was not expecting them in the type of woods I was in. The mosquito population was literally the worst I have ever seen. That was another anomaly about this place. Very upland and very dry, but with Asian Tigers, that doesn’t seem to matter.

    Origins of Pestletown

No barriers were added Bob. No one has ever gone over the sides before or after the improvements were made in the 40 year I have lived here. No guard rails makes for better drivers.

    Chigged!

Happy Chigger Season. Here I am again to report my first case of chiggers. :( Doing a 48 acre survey update today with one of my guys in Franklin Township, Gloucester County in a hardwood forest with a light understory. Not chigger territory in my mind, but the chiggers thought otherwise. Of...

    Origins of Pestletown

Anything within 15' of the road would be long gone now. The Pestletown Road stream crossing of Clark's Branch was completely reconstructed about15 years ago. The road was widened and the brush and trees were removed for at least 20 feet from the new edge of the road on the west side and maybe 15...

That's the same thing I was thinking.

    Murder or Suicide?

I looked at Find A Grave and there appear to be only two Sloans buried in the Atco Cemetery. You would think there would be more given that Sloantown is described as being between Atco and Jackson. Between Atco and Jackson is a very small area that anyone today would just call Atco.

    Murder or Suicide?

This old post mentions Sloantown. I have never heard that name mentioned before. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/sloantown-jacques-bridge-oak-knoll-jacllin-new-bridge.6992/

    Furnishing Style

I did a lot of work for the Giberson family who started the Berlin Auction in 1940. I also went there nearly every Saturday night as a kid with my parents and bought soft pretzels, drag racing and hunting magazines and Revell model building kits. Me and my Dad always stopped at Charlie's Clam...

    Lock Your Vehicles

I would like to meet the woman who had enough balls to recover her own car in Camden. I'll bet when she jumped out of her ride to get the car she said.. "Here, hold my beer.":)

    Cape May County Explorations

A good friend of mine from my gun club just spent 12 days in the hospital from a Brown Recluse bite. He was camping in PA and it bit him while he was asleep. He now has a 15" long incision in his arm from where they had to remove necrotic tissue. I have a photo of his arm but it's too...

    Origins of Pestletown

I have lived in Pestletown for 40 years now and the street signs at the Chew Road intersection have read both Pestletown and Pestleton Road back and forth over the years. Not surprising since ton replaces town in a lot of place names. Chuton appears on the 1885 map I posted down near the...

    Origins of Pestletown

Found It !! This article was written in 1888. To me it seemed clear that Shane's Castle would have been on the north side of Clark's Branch because it references the cemetery that was to later become St. Anthony's, now Waterford Memorial Park. I don't if you know this, but the St. Anthony's...

    Origins of Pestletown

Piney Roots check out this post from 2014 and my responses. I actually attached a mark-up of the 1885 map that I posted this morning. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/shanes-castle-waterford.9921/#post-119722 I will still look for the article that hinted at the location being on...
