This is Carex barrattii, a once-threatened sedge that was delisted several(?) years ago. This was a very unusual patch of over a thousand easily. Amazingly uniform patch about 50' long X 15' wide (a guess). A handsome sedge, I've always said.

This tree is a brute. I think a sweet gum, did not check. But I think a holly behind it may have caused it to do the curve, and then it reached for the sky.
