    One More (for the road)

One More was Brenton's and before that Fett's. When I was a kid it was called Giby's presumably for someone named Giberson. Fett's had "dancing girls" for awhile. Only started going once it was Brenton's and we started living nearby.

    Dr. Greene

I believe that we talked about Dr Green the Hermit of Bass River before. The Doctor from New York shunned society and left for the Pines in the late 1800s. He served as postmaster for a very short-lived town in that area called Rollestone in 1894. Presumably the post office was to be located...

    Sleeper Creek Sawmill

I think the map is for the mill site that was several miles up the Atsion at the mouth of Sleepy Creek. The lidar image appears to be the old Cripps Sawmill.

    Where is this?

Thanks for checking it out. I was surprised to discover that the road was only built in the 1930s. At first I hypothesized that the woodwork might have supported an earlier bridge but topographic maps and aerial imagery appear to disprove this idea. If my travels take me to River Road Clam...

That is the area. South side of the bridge. I don't think I ever took a picture.

    Where is this?

So if you follow Landing Creek upstream to where it passes under Clark's Landing Road there is some sort of wooden structure or bulkhead. It is clearly visible from the road. Does anyone know the history of that structure?

    Where is this?

I did not know immediately but had a pretty good idea where to look. Found it quickly on the map. Kinda feel like I cheated. The small north-south running creek seems too straight to be natural. Any idea if it was dug?

Mystery Canal and Historic Ground Water Levels

I wonder if that oxbow to the west is subject to flooding during exceptionally high tides. Might explain why a ditch was necessary.

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

When Atsion was advertised for sale in 1861 the site was already referred to as Old Goshen Mill which usually indicated that it was the former site of a mill. I have not done an exhaustive search to find out if there are earlier documents that tell us that the mill was gone before then. As for...

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

We should consider that the timbers at the lower end of the canal could be the remains of some type of water-powered industrial works.

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

Vermeule and Cook topos confirm cranberry culture at the old mill pond and the canal diverting the water is quite apparent.

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

Records indicate that Goshen Sawmill was built in 1748 or 1749. The downstream mill that has been called the "new mill" in this thread was called Little Mill and was built by Salter and his partners. It was operating in 1785 if not several years earlier. Nothing in the property records indicates...

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

General Elias Wright came to the same conclusion as Teegate regarding the location of Goshen Gap. He states "The head of Wissickman Creek . . .and the head of a stream called 'Green Limb' . . . are close together and where they come close together seems to have been called 'The Gapp'" The title...

    Eggs in the Pines

We frequently drive through the Pines to visit a favorite watering hole along the shore. They serve Jersey Devils which are deviled eggs topped with a fried oyster. Beats an olive any day. Another restaurant in Beach Haven has them too but they are made a little differently.

Property Stones And More... Fall 2022/ Winter Spring 2023

When a piece of woods is driven by a gun club the "standers" often clear the leaf litter from around their feet to avoid making noise. They usually stand along old roads on these drives. If you said you saw it two weeks ago I would think this was the cause but with all the recent rain it seems...

    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Guy, I always look forward to reading about your adventures in the woods. My guess is that there are many folks here who enjoy seeing what you discovered even though we rarely have anything to contribute or add to the conversation. PLEASE keep it coming! For what it's worth, the early deeds I...

    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Incidentally, A. B. Moore and his wife Achsah Bozarth founded the cranberry bogs at Moore's Meadow. I guess the deeds you were looking at were related to that property of some nearby land. The interesting arrangement of the bogs at Moore's Meadow is due to his many children each getting...

    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Very cool Guy! I have done some fairly extensive research on the Friendship Saw Mill and while Aaron B. Moore certainly owned a share of that enterprise, I do not believe he ever made his residence there. Aaron was probably raised at Fox Chase, a farm and tavern that once stood on the site of...

Teegate, you never, ever, disappoint! Great stuff. I have been driving past this spot on a regular basis for 45 years and I can't drive past without glancing.
