film still seeking new and old Pine Barrens stories

Sounds dumb in theory, but it was pretty awesome in practice. The only real drawbacks were the inability of freshman to play JV or varsity sports, which was unlikely in a school that large anyway, and getting out of school in the dark in the winter.

film still seeking new and old Pine Barrens stories

Overcrowding was a serious issue at Shawnee when Medford, Medford Lakes, Tabernacle, and Indian Mills all fed into it. My freshman year of HS (1984-5) it was so overcrowded that our freshman class had split sessions. We started school at 12:25 PM and went until about 5:00 PM each day. All of our...

    Franklin Parker Preserve

I'm a fairly inexperienced piney hiker, and I was in another section of the preserve with my kids at the same time as pineywoman. I was a little surprised at how useless the Preserve maps were too. Lots of additional trails and roadways that don't appear on the map would have thrown me off too...

Should also point out that someone at the campfire had a radio and the only song I really remember playing was Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It?" ... kinda random, I know, but it's what I remember.

film still seeking new and old Pine Barrens stories

The only Pine Barrens story I really have is from about 1983 and the summer day camp I worked at (as a CIT) had an overnight trip in the pines. We were dropped off by a bus at the Batona Trail on 532 and we hiked past Apple Pie Hill to the Batona campsite near Carranza where we set up camp and...

    batona trail hike

This map: http://www.njconservation.org/documents/FPP_trails_color.pdf seems to indicate that there are multi-use trails that are for bikes.

    batona trail hike

Did someone mention me? Anyway, a few posts back someone posted about the Parker Preserve. I notice that there are a couple observation towers on the trails here. What exactly do they mean by "observation towers"? My boys and I parked in the lot off 532 when we went to the blue hole over the...

    Could Use Some Help

I've found that chiggers only settle in under tight clothing (socks, elastic waistbands, etc.), so I avoid them now by hiking the pines in the nude. :smug:

    Swimming in clay/sand mines...

The water is very clear, and I didn't see any trash in the water itself (although I was only walking along the edges). The syringes were about 20' from the water's edge near the remains of a campfire. I actually saw a small painted turtle swimming in the middle of the blue hole. I was always...

    Swimming in clay/sand mines...

I went to the blue hole next to Chatsworth Lake a couple weeks ago -- my first blue hole experience. Parked up the street right at the curve where another car was parked and hiked back up 563 to the entrance path. When I got back there, there were three people there (this was midday). An older...
