    Courier Post Odd Website

I noticed that the sites for Times Herald and the Courier-Post has the same format. They are both owned by Gannett, as they own many other newspapers.

    Fire in Wharton

See 2015 DEP Map for 5 Mile Crossing, which you known it as California Branch Road. So, it makes sense that the road crosses California Branch.

    Fire in Wharton

I would guess that the blue dash line is California Branch. It appears to be within the original fire area. Does anyone have another name for it? The red line is 5 Mile Crossing. It’s been noted by the FFS. It runs between Old Atsion Rd and Raritan Ave.

Anybody know what made these footprints?

If you google 'Aminal tracks in the snow with tail drag', you will find some good possibilities. I say it could be a muskrat or opossum.

Stone Searching Fall & Winter 2024/2025

Both of you discussed this hill back in February 2023. Guy, you showed the deed on post 16. You are looking for a post, not a stone. There suppose to be one in Roberts Branch too. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/apple-pie-hill-tower-open-saturday.14345/#post-173503

A Year in the Pines, recap- 2024

Just Speculation. I have a hunch that the sandstone excavated from the mining site that I had visited was transportd by wagon to the site of the Harrsville Paper Mill. As the crow flies, the distance between the two is less than four miles. I can not find on the internet where the sandstone was...

A Year in the Pines, recap- 2024

Bob; you are right. I thought I read that fives years ago on the subject of mycorrhiza. But I might have read that Arethusa settles in poor to moderate sphagnum dominated habitats rather than typical open bog habitat.

A Year in the Pines, recap- 2024

Another tidbit of information I had read about Arethusa (same as for other orchids) it needs a 'jump start' to share nutrients from other plants in this case sphagnum moss to help to produce a flower. This process is called 'mycorrhizae' through a network of fungi which connects roots of...

A Year in the Pines, recap- 2024

Why did we find three white Arethusa while finding many in the their nornal color. Plants produce anthocyanins, a water-soluble pigments of deep red, purple, and blue. Flowers that are white cannot produce anthocyanins, likely caused by recessive genetic mutations; a change in the DNA sequence...

A Year in the Pines, recap- 2024

It’s been a good year, so I’d like to go over some high points. Back in 2023, while Bob was conducting surveys on known Swamp Pink locations, I told him of an area that had good potential for finding Swamp Pinks based on its habitat; a slow moving, defined pure clean stream meandering under the...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Drought can reduce tick population through desication. Per what I read. Yes, drought is good when it comes to ticks.

    Berlin Peak

The only fact I can say is that the springs of water that comes to the surface in this area finds its way to the Delaware River from the western slope by way of Timber Creek, Cooper River, and Rancocas River, and on the eastern slope the Great Egg Harbor River and Mullica River and their...

    Where is this?

I also have the photo of the sign in Guy's post; with the same rust spot. My photo was taken in September 2017. And I'm sure that is on a main highway that passes through the Pines. I know of one other sign, but I don't have a photo. That one is on a main 'piney' road. It may be the one on...
