    Pine Barren History Shorts

Guy, Do you know if Asa Pitman is related to George Henry Pitman? I have a deed for a lot in Browns Mills transferring title from George Pitman to Eayre Lippincott near lands of Selah Schull and Levi Parker. I have never understood why I have this deed, as I am not aware of any relation...

    Pine Barren History Shorts

The Jones Tract map surveyed by Joseph Cox in the 1850s has this area named Mt. Relief. I thought I had heard that the original name was a non-english word which meant relief, but sounded similar to misery. I don't recall where I had heard this, though.

I, too, suspect. There was a major rift in the family because of how this all played out.

Richard was obviously on to something based on the size of the bogs that are in that vicinity. I had no idea where it was located.

    Buffins Meadows

It is. He was Richard's brother-in-law and operated the grist mill in Pemberton. The two end up at odds with each other when all is said and done.

It's possible a few were built, as it sounds like Richard had sold a few shares before he lost control of the property.

Guy, this is also in my file - see the following. This is likely how Upton came into possession of the Buffin/Baffin location. A. S. Morris was the trustee for a mortgage on Richard's lands, which, after the end of the Civil War, went into bankruptcy.

    Buffins Meadows

Attached is the prospectus from, i'm guessing, 1866. I don't think it is the White property, as the Whites were related to the Jones family, which is how they got the property. Fenwick was the nephew of Benjamin and a cousin of Richard and Samuel's. Benjamin or R&SH Jones sold Fenwick those...

    Buffins Meadows

Interesting. Thank you Guy. I have a prospectus for this company from the early 1860s. Looking at your map, I see Baffin Brook. It my have originally been called Baffins Meadow, as the handwriting may be interpreted as either an a or a u. I'm intersted in anything you may dig up.

I don't own it, although I would really like to. It is just a better picture.

    Benjamin Jones of Hanover Furnace

I am posting this for anyone who may be interested in what the proprietor of Hanover Furnace looked like. I had previously been told by a distant relative that there had been a painting of Benjamin Jones but it had gotten destroyed. However, he was mistaken, as the painting still exists...

    Water Filters?

Berkey Water Filter. We use it daily, it is gravity fed and will filter pond water. We've taken it camping in Maine and filtered the pond water there. It has been used on numerous humanitarian aid missions, such as the relief effort in Haiti after the earthquake. The initial start-up cost is a...

    Two trips to the pines

Nice photos guy. I have never seen a tree frog; though, I hear them all the time. We bought a house that is literally situated in a swamp last year. It's a stupid place for a house, but it sure is neat, especially for the little ones.

    Mary Ann Forge

I'm a little late to this thread but wanted to thank you, Jerseyman, for a very interesting read. If you would like, I will see if I can get a cleaner close-up of Marian Forge from the Jones Tract and forward it to you.
