ESTELL MANOR - A flourishing village once sat along the Tuckahoe River, its several dozen homes housing workers for the booming bog iron, cranberry, and timber industries there.
Ships ran from the mouth of the river to its head, loading up on artillery for the war effort. Wood cut at the local sawmill was used to make more ships, as well as the rest of the buildings that surrounded it.
Two and a half centuries later, there is little evidence of this scene. What remains is the Head of the River Church, the oldest house of worship in Atlantic County, and the oldest Methodist church in the state.
Once a regular gathering place for the bustling populace, it now opens only a few times a year, for weddings, baptisms, funerals, the first Sunday in December for its Christmas service, and the second Sunday in October for the commemoration of its construction.
Sunday marks the building's 219th anniversary. It was formally dedicated in 1792, even though its floors were not finished for another 20 years.
