ATLANTIC CITY — Local surfers didn’t have much to celebrate Christmas Day in the way of rideable waves, but an $8.4 million jetty extension project could bode well for a popular surfing beach at Vermont Avenue.
Known as Crystals for the broken shells that often accumulate on the shoreline there, the water was empty Sunday afternoon near the end a month that’s produced some of the mildest December weather on record. Within the next t
hree months, contractors will start working on the Atlantic City North End Shore Protection project that will double the lengths of jetties — or stone groins — at Vermont and Massachusetts avenues, state Department of Environmental Records show.

The work is meant to better maintain the beach, which fronts Revel Entertainment Group’s megacasino. A recent replenishment project by the Army Corps of Engineers widened the erosion-prone stretch of sand from just 50 to 100 feet to 350 feet.
