On Sept 1 we paddled the Mullica from a beach below 206 to Locks Bridge ( Beaver Pond). We also paddled it 2 weeks earlier but the batteries in my camera were dead. NIMH batteries don't hold their charge for months, but that's another story. Upstream everything looked normal despite the burn on both sides.
Getting close to where it opens up there was heat damage:
Party beach, blacker than black:
The oaks regrow:
So do the pines:
So does the fern:
Odd, but out in the middle of the water where nothing else was burned the beaver lodges were, yes, most of them:
A fresh beaver dam;
Locks Bridge is mostly intact:
That fire was very HOT. I suspect alot of the pines won't survive, but judging by the hot fire out by Hampton Furnace in the late 90's, new pines will sprout. Quite an accomplishment considering the extreme stress and they are just sitting in sand.
