LAKEWOOD — A rabbi responsible for an illegal landfill that could contaminate nearby water wells has informed state authorities that he has begun the cleanup of the site, officials said Tuesday.
Rabbi Chaim Abadi has made arrangements with the state Department of Environmental Protection to stave off a looming court ordered $1,000-a-day fine set to begin this week by beginning to remove illegally buried materials out of a Vermont Avenue dump site, officials said.
For two years, Abadi of Miller Road and the DEP have battled over site. The DEP ordered the rabbi to remove thousands of bags buried at the Lakewood site and another on Frank Applegate Road in Jackson because the agency contends it could contaminate nearby wells.
