Forest fire rages anew in Camden County
WATERFORD – A major forest fire spread through 250 acres of Wharton State Forest Sunday.
The fire was about the same size as the blaze that crews battled Friday in the same area, according to a spokesman with the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service. Sunday's fire was on the west side of Route 206, while Friday's fire was on the east side, authorities said.
Campers and hikers were told to leave Goshen Park Campgrounds Sunday morning as the Atsion Ranger Station was designated as the staging area for firefighting operations around 10:30 a.m. By the afternoon, Camden County Fire Police shut down Jackson and Atsion roads.
The blaze was visible in the sky in many parts of Camden County. Twitter users reported seeing the fire from Eastern High School in Voorhees and Atco Raceway.
By late afternoon, the fire was not contained, but authorities believed they could keep it from spreading.
