Thanks to Woodjin and Largo, Sarah and I had a wonderful South Jersey weekend. We drove down Friday night and had dinner with some friends who just moved to Mays Landing. They live just off of Route 40 in a development opposite the Mays Landing Diner. After that we headed to our hotel in Absecon.
Saturday morning we got up early and drove out to Makepeace WMA as per Jeff's directions and I put the new
truck into 4x4 for the first time! There were a lot of puddles due to the recent rain and I "christened" the F-350 with its first mudbath. We basically stuck to a main road that eventually led out to 322. On the way I saw a lot of trails that looked interesting, but I'm not ready to pinstripe my truck just yet. Having such a wide vehicle is a little frustrating, but once I get a handheld GPS I can just leave the truck and continue on foot.
The lovely Sarah driving the F-350 for the first time at Makepeace:
Did this tree fall because it had burned?
Me on a small hill in Makepeace beside a firebreak:
As we got closer to 322 we came to what I guess was a gun club to the left and to the right there was a large open area that looked like it may have been a gravel mine at one time. It was a large open area that had been excavated and scraped of all vegetation. We looped around back to Route 30 and headed north on Elwood Road (623) and took that to Pleasant Mills-Weekstown Road. We took a nice little drive around Lake Nescochague and took in the sights of the old mill and the neat little houses. Does anyone know what town that area is part of? Another function of this trip was to scope out possible places to buy a home and that area is definitely on our "find out more" list.
Anyway, after stopping to check out the cemetery on Pleasant Mills Road (the one with the house right next to it and a creek running behind it) we continued on to Batsto and took Batsto-Washington Road. We drove around aimlessly in Wharton for a while until we got hungry and set out for Route 30 again and hit a Wawa. All in all a gorgeous day to be in the woods and a nice ride in the new truck. If anything this trip convinced me that I NEED a GPS so that I can pinpoint areas I want to visit.
The day turned out to be much better than the night, well, sort of. We decided to take a walk on the boardwalk and eventually the lure of the casino got to me. Wild Wild West hammered me to the tune of $200 bucks at the blackjack table before I'd had my fill... We decided to head back to the hotel and ended up drowning our sorrows at the Black Cat Bar and Grill-nice place with Flying Fish on tap and a great jukebox. The night ended on a high note when we had dinner at Dock's Oyster House in Atlantic City. GREAT Seafood and really cool atmosphere.
It was a great weekend-hope to have many more like it before chigger season starts! Thanks again for the directions!
