EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — Banding a bluebird is tricky work.
“You need patience and a steady hand,” said John Layton, a retired carpenter who has tended the birds — first in his own backyard, then at drainage basins across Egg Harbor Township — for more than two decades.
First, there’s the approach. To signal his arrival, Layton said, he taps on the side of the wooden birdhouses.
“If it’s cool in the morning, the mother bluebird will fly right in your face,” he said. “I back off and let them fly out on their own.”
