Gusty winds fanned a brush fire near the eastern end of Barnegat Boulevard today, sending billows of gray and black smoke aloft and drawing in trucks from at least five area fire companies.
Police shut down Barnegat Boulevard between Route 9 and Rose Hill Road. Police said no evacuations are necessary so far. A small crowd gathered on the corner of the state highway.
“You saw some of the flames shoot up on both sides,” of Barnegat Boulevard, said Jason Bucsak of Barnegat, who estimated the first smoke and alarms erupted around 10:45 a.m.
With so many brush fires – including more than 1,000 acres that burned near Chatsworth Monday – “this is insane. We haven't had any rain,” Bucsak said
