I know that there have been claims the biggest cedar is on Mount Misery brook and I hear tell of another biggest cedar on Cedar Creek. These guys claim the biggest one is down here near me the only problem is I don't know exactly where it's at so we can measure and decide.I wrote the guy who put up this site about ten years ago and asked the loaction of the tree(naive me) he proceeded to tell me he had forgotten where it was.Naive yes,but I'm not stupid. I have looked for it only once but that was before I had aerials.I have located some big looking trees in the otherwise cut over swamp of about 70 years ago so I have a few spots that are worth looking. If any one would like to participate in a sweep of Nixon swamp this winter looking for this tree let me know.I saw a nature walk to it advertised once but had to work that day so never got to see it.Most of the swamp is cedar regrowth from apparently the early 1900's and the area is criscrossed by old corduroy roads and the area is generally pretty thick. The one large vernal pond I have only been to one side of it and never encircled it.A very pretty but treacherous area.Thats one area and the others are nearby where I think the tree might be.

I think Bob wants to get down there and look for it also. We need to plan that one day.

Another rumor that I heard was that the largest Atlantic white cedar was located along the Nixon Branch, Cumberland County and close to the bay. Three hundred years old and almost ten feet around at chest height.

Thanks for the reminder of the older post, Teegate. I was chatting with a state arborist and I was told of several old giants. It was my understanding that certain champion species are rare because the trees were harvested, such as cedar and oak. I know it is off topic but the fellow also told me about several huge Sycamores near the town of Belvidere. Their tops may span two hundred feet across. He gave me the same information about the cedar that was in link, so atleast it wasn't a "tall" tale. The tree in your photo is awesome!

I truly believe that Jeff is not getting the proper credit for reporting that tree. Granted, we have seen photo's of someone there earlier but they did not report it like Jeff did, He has apparently heard nothing back from them which is discouraging

this tree was 9ft 6 inches in 74.I see the Big Mutha thread measured that tree at 9 ft 8.75 inches but that was recently. The Nixon tree may be bigger after another 37 years of growth if it's still there. If the Nixon tree is bigger I nominate it the Big Daddy. In any case the Big Mutha looks cooler,it's climable.Almost ashame to dethrone it.
