I've been seeing these for a couple/few weeks now on Google Maps. It gives an artificial 3D effect. But, you have to zoom all the way down to appreciate the full effect.

I for the most part only zoom in around the barrens and the area's there seem not to have it. I was looking along 295 last night and saw it for the first time. If it was live video you could watch a ball game in Philly. They are slightly old because the Eagles stadium was being built.

I read an article in PCWorld that Microsoft wants to topple Google Maps. Several months ago Microsoft added 165 terabytes of new satellite imagery to Bing Maps and Google countered by adding 3D landmarks to its service. The outcome of better and more detailed imagery from both companies is better for all of us. However, I saw that the quality varies from each depending on the location. Google may be superior for one, while failing for another and vice versa.
