Bird I.D.

While driving through the woods today I saw a bird that I have never seen before. It was about the size of a BlueJay but it's entire torso was bright red and the wings were dark, maybe black. I can't remember the head color. It darted around too much for me to get a photo.

Yes, that is the bird! Very bright color, it was practically glowing in the sunshine.

Good sighting! I don't think they're extraordinarily rare, but I don't think I've seen more than one or two.

There have been a number of them spotted over the past couple of weeks in Cumberland Cnty.

Scarlet Tanagers are not rare and neither are summer tanagers but both live in the treetops and are only here in spring and summer so they are rarely spotted as they very seldon come down out of the canopy.The scarlet sound much like a robin with a sore throat so I will home in on their call and then try to spot them with binocs.The summer tanagers song is faster and clearer.the scarlet has a chick ree call.

I saw this one in Whitesbog. He would let me get just close enough and take off. He finally went around a corner and I hid behind a bush to take the picture.
