On Tuesday, I made my first visit to Black Run Preserve in Evesham. I had heard good things about it, and it lived up to expectations.

Lower Schafer Bog.jpg

Lower Schafer Bog, located near the northwest corner of the preserve.

Two of the bogs were named in the 1860s by two brothers-in-law for their wives. One was named "Rebecca," while the other, pictured here, was named "Lydia."

The preserve offers more than bogs. There was a nice variety through the trails. Some parts were tighter and more woody, while others were more open.

Roots were thick here.

The trails were generally flat, but there were a few spots with modest upslopes.

A pretty view near the end of the day.

Spotted knotweed.jpg

There was a small patch of spotted knapweed along one of the trails. (Thanks to bobpbx and manumuskin for confirmation.)

Mushroom menu.jpg

On the "mushroom menu" Tuesday: Donut, slider, egg, and cheese puffs.

The area has Quaker roots whose influence can still be felt today. One of the longest trails at the preserve is named "Peaceful Partners." At one spot, there was a sign with a QR code. Scanning that code provided a link to an brief excerpt from a JFK speech on the subject of peace. It seemed fitting to include this historical footnote here. It is less than fifty seconds long.
