New Jersey Bluebird Society member Allen Jackson and other local advocates are working to make this year's housing search the best one yet for bluebirds.
Humans are not the only creatures who face a desolate housing market. Bluebird pairs, which nest from March to late September, soon will be back to their bleak annual home search, scouting for the perfect place to build a nest and raise their offspring safely.
The problem is the bluebirds are picky. They need the right location, not too close to predators, and specialized dimensions for the entryway. And they have a lot of nonnative competition willing to grab the rug right from under them if they're not quick.
"A bluebird trail (which is a series of nestboxes) can be anything you want it to be - but just as with real estate, it's all about location, location, location," said Jackson, of Millville, a retired biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
