My son Nick drove to Bonnaroo in Tennessee with 2 friends, camping equipment, a case of Coors gold and a gallon of vodka-and who knows what else in the car. He turned 21 last Saturday. I worried about him, they left 4pm Wednesday and drove all night. He is there and okay (or was as of Friday morning). I hope he comes home with just the experience and not a ticket or something.

I remember when I was 19(?). I went to Watkins Glen in 1973. It was the Dead, the Allman Brothers, and The Band. For awhile it was in the Guiness Book as the largest Rock Concert in the World. There were 600,000 people there. It was madness, absolute crazy. The music turned out to be a secondary event.

They have (the promoters) come a long, long way in terms of comfort for the attendees. In the 70's you might get lucky if they sprayed you with a hose from a fire truck right before you passed out from the heat. And forget a decent place to take care of nature's calling. At Bonnaroo, they have plenty of water, or so it seems. In addition to internet kiosks, ATM machines, telephones, stores, etc. Even so, Nick said they almost passed out from the heat in the field they were camping in. They had to move to the shade of the woods.

Looking at the photo's on the website, it looks like a complete different type of people than when you were younger Bob. The kids today have much more money and somewhat less worries than the kids of the 60's. By worries I mean the draft and such.

Looking over the names playing I only saw one that I know, so it appears I am just a little out of touch. Tinnitus does that to you. :(

Since the last woodstock concert in the ninties (which ended in disaster, fire, rapes, violence) there has been far greater concern for security and safety at these large festivals. I almost went to that last woodstock concert. I didn't go. a Few of my students were there.

Bonnaroo is just a great time! Went last year and couldn't get over how organized it was for a group of humanity that big. I'm sure he'll have some fine memories of the event.

Yeah Bonnaroo is the big one. The best bands are there but the crowds are too much for me. If I was 21 like your son Bob I would be all about that place. I hope he had a great time. I just returned from a much much smaller fest "Stonehenge", it was tremendous. This guy named "Winnebago Bob" has about 100 acres of beautiful land in Lycoming County PA. and he throws one hell of a party. There were about 1000 people at the event. I did a lot of the bigger fests like Lollapaloozas, Woodstock(not the real one) and other big name fests. I can't stand the massive crowds in addition to robocop security.
