Trenton - The state Forest Fire Service is setting some fires around
South Jersey as a way to prevent them.

The agency has begun controlled burns in its southern district, which
includes Atlantic, Cape May, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem
counties. Fires are also being set in the central district of
Burlington and Ocean counties.

The supervised burns are a way to get rid of underbrush that helps
flames spread during an actual forest fire.

There is no set schedule for the burns because they depend so much on
weather and wind conditions, said Glenn Liepe, a division fire warden
based in Mays Landing.

The Forest Fire Service notifies local police departments about
controlled burns, and signs are also posted to alert nearby residents.

Service statistics show that 14 acres were burned in 26 fires through
Feb. 22. That's down from 31 acres burned in 24 fires for the same
period last year.

Spring is the prime season for forest fires in New Jersey.
