All,

For those of you who missed the Carranza celebration today, here is a
quick review with photo's.

I was there an hour and a half early and was able to watch them set
up. The Mt Holly VFW Post 11 were pretty efficient and I commend them.

Soon after I arrived they put a photo of him at the monument and I was
able to get close and photograph it.

I then went over to where they had newspaper articles from that era
describing what happened. Some of them are quite interesting.

One of his relatives is a member of the Mt Holly Post 11 and was there
to place a wreath at the monument. He is the man to the left of the
woman in the below picture. The woman was sitting directly behind me
when she was asked to go up an deliver it along with him and she was
thrilled. Just look at her face in the photo and realize just seconds
before she was a spectator. It is important to note that she knew many
of the members.

It was a hot day in the sun and the military that were there were
standing in the sun for quite a while. They eventually had enough and
laid down their weapons and headed into the woods for shade. Here is a
photo of their weapons. They were assault weapons and hopefully not
loaded.

For you woman out there this photo is interesting. The ranger in this
photo holding her hat is the head of the ranger's in the Wharton State
Forrest. The woman to her right is the Mayor of Tabernacle.

Another photo of the Mayor of Tabernacle.

The heat took it's toll on one woman, and the Tabernacle squad arrived
to take her away.

Guy,
I appreciate your report and photos. I can't believe the lack of traffic at this message board since it was started.
Maybe all the true enthusiasts of the Pines don't spend much time online. I dunno. When I post things here, I see very few hits on my posts, even after a week or a month. Yet on other message boards online, you can't even keep up with the messages posted every day. Who knows?

Barry,

There is a limited number of members, but still there should be more posts. Maybe in the winter it will increase. I try to post to both if it is relevant.

I too enjoyed the photos and information about the Carranza event. I didn't get to attend.

Sometimes there are posting lulls, Guy and Barry,on bulletin boards. The other board where I've been posting for years, run by some local guys and posted on by some people I know, has hit another period where nobody has been posting for awhile. One of the regulars I know IMed me recently to ask where everybody was. For the longest time it was a very active bulletin board; sometimes people responded so quickly it practically became a chatroom.

I know myself, I have my ups and downs and sometimes I have other things that preoccupy me. I like this bulletin board. It's great exchanging information about places in the Pine Barrens and discussing different issues. Even when people have a different point of view on something, the postings generally remain civil. This is what America is all about and this bulletin board is somewhat Jeffersonian in nature.

There are people here who use the Pine Barrens in different ways. There was a poster who discussed ATV use in the Pine Barrens, some people like to find critters, some flowers, some trees; people are interested in landscapes, historic places, abandoned railroad tracks (one of my favorites). They all seem to want to exchange ideas about different things and want to use but not abuse the Pine Barrens. I have learned alot from other posters and have been stimulated to check things out. I really appreciate the information some of you have given me, such as directions to places and some inside information about them.

There was something on the Pine Barrens Enthusiasts homepage about helping in certain areas on the site. I hesitate because it may entail some technical prowess, which I don't have. I'm basically a liberal arts type who learned how to use the tools of the 21st century on a basic level. I also hesitate because I'm a procrastinator. I've been cut down to part time the last few months in my job. I've been looking for a part time job. I just know if I take on some project or get another part time job that suddenly my work at my present job will pick up, which it could do at any time.

After I visit the Webb Mill Bog I plan to report on it. I realize that for some reason my brain was stuck on thinking that the bog was on route 72. When I looked at a map I saw that route 539 was north of 72 and 539. Also, a poster told me the bog was on 539. I imagine it's not too far from the Cedar Hill Fire Tower or from the sand road where I started my quest to find Forked River Mountain after you gave me directions, Guy.

What would be nice would be to have a PBE get-together and maybe drive into the woods and find some tracks, towns, etc. I noticed the get-together forum wasn't exactly bursting with activity, but it would be nice.

Although maybe the 'skeeters would be too much.

I noticed that the get-together forum never gets any traffic. I posted about my last outing and nobody responded. In fact I had forgotten to post about my outing coming up. I just took care of that now.
After that outing I will hold future outings as well. I'm open to suggestions. I'm interested in places I've never been to, such as Parkdale, Hampton Furnace, The Blue Hole of Winslow, and so on.
By the way, did you see my reply to your post about books? I like all of the ones I have and my advice would be to choose the ones that sound interesting to you, although some of those are out of print. I get my out of print books through http://www.abebooks.com/ and through Ebay.
P.S.- I hope some day you put your website back online. I used to like it.

Not a bad idea! To deal with the skeeters, just use some of that home made bug repellent I posted about. Of course in the summer there's the heat. I try to visit a place in the Pine Barrens where I can jump into water to cool off. Or maybe --I'm thinking about doing this my next trip (I did this before) go to the beach to cool off and visit the Pine Barrens in the early evening.

As far as bugs. Sometimes repellent doesn't work. I visited the beach at Sandy Hook on a very hot day recently, and the sand flys seemed to ignor the repellent. They were all over the place and acted like they were rabid! The National Park Service needs to do something about that. It was like a scene from Alfred Hitchc-o-c-k's THE BIRDS! Bring back the DDT baby! Part of the famous mystery/thriller movie maker's last name was electronically edited out so maybe it will work if I use hypens.

I'm strongly considering putting it back online. I now have a digital camera so I would be able to put pics up quickly. I also think I am going to buy a Jeep Cherokee so I'll be able to get in and out of the woods easier than I can now with my Miata! :)

I saw your post about the books - I usually use Bibliofind.com to get my out of print books. My next book will be Heart of the Pines.

The Sandy Hook blackflys/greenflys are murder. You really need to go there on a windy day. I haven't been to Sandy Hook since last year, and that was just to enjoy a few frosty cold beers at the Gulls Nest.

Another idea for a Pine Barrens GTG: The Pine Barrens Tavern Tour! I stopped in the Green Bank tavern once, and it was quite a hoot. Ended up having a long conversation with this guy "Captain Norm" who told me that there was a lot of gold coins in the Batsto River, and who really didn't want to talk about Harrisville. And who was annoyed since I wouldn't drink Applejack (I was only 20 at the time) and didn't know any good stories!

It was interesting to read about the guy who found Captain Carranza's body and the wrecked plane being charged with living with another man's wife. I guess the authorities went after people who did things like that then and husbands wanted their wives back. This brings me to the joke about the speeder the cop pulled over: A guy drove speeding down the road, way over the speed limit when in the rear view mirror he saw a police car with flashing lights. For awhile he tried to outrun the cop but then decided to pull over. The officer approached the guy and said "look, it's Friday evening and I'm near the end of my shift and I have the weekend off and I really don't feel like having paperwork hold me up tonight. So if you give me a real good excuse, one I've never heard before, I'll let you go, scott free. "

The speeder answered "My wife ran off with a cop this weekend and I thought you were racing after me to give her back."

"OK, have a nice weekend," the officer replied.
