hi,i was just lookind at the carranza road photos where the road turns from pavement to sand.i cannot find any info if that road which starts at rt.206,then goes to friendship was there before carranzas crash, but please correct if i am wrong on anything ,if it wasnt,to me history was changed if it wasnt.one of the branches of the tuckerton stage road is not very far off to where carranza road is,as the crow flies from my house to my dock on great bay boulevard in little egg harbor is 52.7 miles,i have several different ways of going to my dock, sometimes through pemberton to magnolia road, four mile circle to rt.72,then rt.539 to tuckerton, which comes out to 63 miles,if i take carranza rd.which is actually my favorite way,the mileage is 59 miles.sometimes even though it is slower but shorter,i cut straight through friendship instead of turning left onto speedwell road,i cut straight thru friendship, going through past hawkins bridge, godfrey bridge, then past the public campground out to rt.563 past micks,my speed is limited to 20 mph,but the old saying, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.i traveled by car and 4by4 on tuckerton road out to maxwell on rt.563,i went passed maxwell went a little distance where the road then took a big north turn, the road to bodines across the wading sort of disintegrated, the road to the north was a big washout, did not want to try that even in my 4by4.i will hopefully in the spring try to find going by bodines way, crossing the wading and try to find, then explore the way to maxwell on tuckerton road.just thinking how the carranza crah changed history, the distance from carranza to tuckerton road at that point is nothing.wouldnt it be great to take the tuckerton road, cross the wading, maybe stop at a new brew place having some cold ones then on to tuckerton.question for guy,why was tuckerton road changed to iron pipe going to maxwell?thanks, jimbo

Well, in 1889 the George Cook map shows that Carranza road from the turnoff near the Boot Camp to Friendship was not there. And the Pemberton 1903 quad available on this site also shows that Carranza road from the boot camp to Friendship was not there. So the story that the road was cut to remove the body of Carranza in 1928 could actually be true.

As for Tuckerton being changed to Iron Pipe I have not idea why that is. But if you notice the available quads now show the portion of Tuckerton from the boot camp to Washington as Hampton Gate road. So it appears nobody is calling it Tuckerton except those of us who read about it and know the route.

also, when i was a yougin in the 1950s when my dad used to take me surf fishing in barnegat light between 12th and 14th street where the ships mast is,then it was a nice cast out to it,i asked my dad why does the bridges on rt.70 say rt.40,he then told me rt.72 was rt.40 s,and that it used to take 3.30 hrs.to get to long beach island,he and his friends used to camp out and have clam bakes with no hassles, but my question is like carranza road, instead of widening 40s.where the original road is,the engineers proceeded to cut rt.72 taking all them trees, now as we all know, try going to lbi on a friday,or coming back on sunday with the traffic, thats why i take the back roads to tuckerton, takes me about an hour an fifteen minutes, correct me if i am wrong, but i heard that a congressman or senator wants rt.72 widened to 4 lanes like rt.55,i am for it as they have the old road sitting next to rt.72,as long as there are provisions for no mckeeds, burger kings, etc, the new housing going up past four mile i thought was in the exclusion zone, also how about the houses on speedwell road,i heard correct me if i am wrong again, but theywere allowed to build because a controlled burn!!!!!!!!got out of hand, and this allowed the owner to sell to developers?also the politician who is for widening rt.72,wants rt.55 continued to where it was to originally go hooking up with the parkway between stone harbor and avalon,i take my grandkids to wildwood in the summer, visit my numerous friends in the villas, and when you get off rt.55 at port elizabeth,rt.47 is backed up all the way to wildwood,on a friday night and on the trip back on sunday,rt.347 is a bypass but that is also 8 miles of traffic mania, once again i am for it as long as alot of property is not taken or an archeological site is threatened or anenvironmental site is threatened.thanks, jimbo

What house are you talking about on Speedwell Road?

As far as I know route 72 was called S-40 and route 70 was route 40. Why 72 was S-40 I have no idea. Do the bridges on 72 just say 40? I am assuming these bridges are towards the shore??

It is also inscribed on the bridges in Marlton and Medford with one bridge still showing the numbers. All the others now have guard rails in front of the text.

That is not a development. Steve Lee who owns that property (Speedwell Tract) logged the wood and sold it. The trees are growing back.

EDIT: the one new house is his sisters.

Near Mt. Misery
I think they are just letting it regrow. It was for the lumber. I haven't been past there in a bit but I didn't see any signs of cranberry bogs or blueberry rows.
