Cloverdale Farm
This farm is located on West Bay Ave in Barnegat. After leaving Rt 72 East, turn left on West Bay, not too far before the GS Parkway is a dirt road on your right and this leads to Cloverdale Farm. The Ocean County Natural Land Trust purchased this farm about six years ago. Little has been done to the property since purchase but because of funding things is moving slowly, and that’s OK. Cloverdale was a Mom and Pop cranberry farm for many years and it has that look that time stood still. On the property is some old farm equipment, the working out buildings, the farmhouse, a two holer outhouse that is very close quarters. As you enter the property there is a lily pond that has an abundance of wildflowers. When I was there some women were picking the cranberries as you will see in the pictures.

Have been there many times. It is now part of Ocean County Parks, Cloverdale Farm County Park, with a number of programs held there during the year, see the link. The bogs are one of the few remaining dry harvest bogs left, they just had a program abouot the dry pick method. I was able to get some Great Horned Owl chick pix there one spring.

Thanks to the both of you for the information on Cloverdale. I didn't know that it was there until recently. It seems like a quiet place to go. I hope when they restore the farm they do it for the historical value and not for it's use as a playground. The threads were very helpful. Thanks again.

Most of what has been done so far at Cloverdale has been inside the 1870s farmhouse. The second floor has been converted to office space and the first floor will be a small visitor center. Two rooms will be devoted to the history of the farm and of cranberry agriculture in New Jersey and a third room will cover other agricultural topics related to our region, such as blueberry farming, plant gathering, etc. The exhibits are about ¾ completed and will be fairly basic and introductory in nature.

The farm itself is going to be left as natural as is possible. A small structure containing public restrooms will be built and an area will be delineated for more organized parking. Most of the bogs will be kept in cultivation, for school and group tours as well as public picking. Visitors will also be able to follow a marked trail around the farm, using a self-guided brochure for information.

Most of the resources of the Parks Department have been spent on Jakes Branch and Tip Seaman County Parks during the last few years but now things will focus more on Cloverdale, so expect to see more progress in the near future.

The walk around the bogs is a nice long hike. I spent a whole day there recently exploring both sides and it took all day. It was wonderful!
