Condemned?

The target symbol is on what I believe to be the letter 'e'. Looks to me that it says "condemned." I found it curious. Thoughts?

I agree with your assertion, but don't know why somebody felt it necessary to write that.

Yes, I believe there are several quadrangles with that notation. I noticed it when I downloaded them. Might mean this was an old map that had been replaced by a newer version, but don't really know. Remember, I was looking for the oldest available maps, but "back in the day", the USGS would have wanted to replace old versions after a revised copy was released.
