Summary
What makes a wolf a wolf? For more than 30 years, scientists, conservationists, and policymakers attempting to restore and protect the large wild canids that once roamed North America have pondered that question. Now, a study of the complete genomes of 28 canids reveals that despite differences in body size and behavior, North American gray wolves and coyotes are far more closely related than previously believed, and only recently split into two lineages. Furthermore, the endangered red and eastern wolves are not unique lineages with distinct evolutionary histories, but relatively recent hybrids of gray wolves and coyotes, the scientists report online this week in Science Advances. And that may be a problem, because the Endangered Species Act doesn't explicitly protect hybrid animals.

I just saw the attached video today. It is frightening to see how fast the coyote grabs and ragdolls the small dog. Thank God for his Rottweiler buddy.

It brings some real fear into my mind regarding our two dogs. We are hearing more and more coyotes across the street from our house lately and they seem to be getting braver as they are sounding off closer and closer to the homes. Two weeks ago I got up early to go snow goose hunting and I went out back with the dogs at 2:30 a.m. . Directly across the street a coyote started a bark/yip call that immediately caught my dogs' attention. I yelled Here ! to my two dogs and the Lab immediately ran to me and I got him in the house. The hardheaded Springer perked right up and headed out front to investigate. I had to chase him down and grab his collar and drag him to the front door.

My son has had them light up out front this past fall several times while he was getting his hunting stuff together and has been able to hear them running through the leaves. We used to have a few stray cats wandering the neighborhood but now I rarely see them. I think I know what is happening to them.
