BRIDGETON — Cumberland County hopes to have money committed this fall for a down payment on about 17 miles of trail for nature-loving hikers and riders in two townships along Delaware Bay.
The county is asking New Jersey for $25,000 toward developing the trail, which would run from Bivalve to the East Point Lighthouse, linking Commercial and Maurice River.
The county would put $25,000 of its own money into the project as well.
The trail is one of six identified in a Rails to Trails feasibility study completed in 2010 for the county.
“It’s going to take more (money) than that, but this will get it going,” county Planning Director Director Robert Brewer said.
Brewer said Commercial already has done work on some trails between Port Norris and Bivalve.
