Went down to the Manumuskin Nature Preserve of rt. 55 today. Was hoping to see some box turtles but I got down there a little late in the day. Did manage to find two males. Here is a pic of one(picture quality is poor)
Also saw a bunch of wild turkey's. Thats about it though

It is always nice to find turtles. They look a little shy :)

hmm...funny, i was thinking about heading out to find some box turtles today too! I'm not sure where in Manumuskin you went, i usually go down this one trail and it eventually opens up to some kind of reservior. Around the area are drift fences set up by biologists for pine snakes.

I was my first time back there. I have been meaning to explore more of the southern end of the pine barrens. I go to menatico ponds alot, but wanted to attempt to find a back entrance to the ponds. In doing I stumbled upon Manumuskin Preserve. Unfortunately is was absolutely pouring out and I was unsure of the area so I walked about a mile, and explored the area around it for box turtles. I figured it was an ideal day for boxies with the constant rains and higher temps. Also the constant sound of dirt bikes drives me crazy so I left there and explored the backside of menatico a little bit. I was glad to find a couple boxies since it seems like there becoming less common throughout the pines. However i do seem to have alot of luck with finding them further south towards the shore. Also does anyone know where that wide trail/road eventually leads to at the beginning of Manumuskin Preserve? Thanks

I have always been surprised that areas south of the A/c expressway have been almost ignored in the various posts on the forum. I was going to submit a thread asking about these areas as I have been curious and looking forward to exploring them. I did visit the Makepeace lake WMA this summer and was impressed. I really want to check out/fish the menantico lakes.

I agree you don't hear as much about the southern range of the pine barrens on this website. I always like that area, and in my search for turtles always seem to find more down there, especially box turtles. I go to menatico ponds alot and have heard that the New Jersey state bass record was caught in one of those sandwashed ponds. Pretty interseting.
