Defending yourself from a bear on your porch in your underwear is illegal hunting?

From the brief reporting in the article, it doesn't appear he had any reason to be defensive at all. No call to the police, 911 or a CO. No property damage. What was he defending against?

Agree with that! He was on a second floor deck, so even if he were to be attacked he had plenty of time to go inside before the Bears could climb up. There was no evidence the Bears made any threats, other than being in his yard. A terrible waste of wildlife.
