This is an interesting read:

http://books.google.com/books?id=bg...&resnum=1&ved=0CBcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

In here, the eminent, and I am sure well-meaning, Dr. Seneca Egbert from Philadelphia proposes damming the Mullica and all its feeder streams at the head of tide, in order to make a resevoir all the way to Atsion. Then, they would pump to another resevoir on the westward side to flow towards the Cooper River and another resevoir, thence to be pumped under the Delaware river in order to releive the poor quality of water in Philadelphia. The take would be a measly 450,000,000 gallons per year to start. His selling point so that Jerseyan's would not cry foul? It would also benefit Camden.

Think of all that would have been lost if somebody actually put that into action.

Read the planned trip further in the article...down the Delaware, over to the shore, and into the Pines. I'd give a lot to be able to join them.

Interesting that these fellers took a shot at this even after NJ passed the law that prevented Wharton's vision from becoming a reality. But thank God these plans never materialized. Could you imagine?
