All,

We headed to Colliers Mills to check on a few things today and came up empty handed. We then moved on to Apple Pie Hill to check on something, and it appears I have to go back again. So we then headed to the Great Swamp and parked on the road shown here.

We entered the swamp heading south and came upon the very long savannah shown in the map. This thing goes on forever! It is obvious it was at one time for producing cranberries.

We eventually found what we were after...Burlington County 64.

Fifteen feet away is the three town marker of Hammonton, Shamong, and Washington Township. The monument is in the front and Jessica is sitting on County 64 in the below photo. If you look closely you can see she has cut off most of her hair.

We wandered around and then walked back to the open area at the end of that road.

I seem to remember someone here mentioning there was a farm there at one time, but I can't be certain if my memory is correct. On the outside there is very little evidence of dwellings ever being here, until you look where a fallen tree has brought up some of the ground. Bricks are evident.

No..it is the long snakelike strip that you see in the below link. Zoom out and look how far that extends.

Much has been said about the Great Swamp, but as we found out during the 3 River Crossing hike, it really is not much of a swamp. The savannahs are wet but all of the other area's around them (in that area) are dry and easy to walk in. We need to set up a date and just walk them again. It seems that we have been slipping in that area this year. Not much has been happening.

Nice report Guy, and a beautiful area. If you recall, that clearing was where we started the 3 river crossing hike. I originally had us using that savannah as the initial highway into the swamp but nixed it because I knew it would tax us at the beginning of the hike.

I would be out hiking more, but you understand what has me down and depressed.

There is interest by others in exploring that area of the Great Swamp again, so whenever you can get some time lets set that up. This is the best time to do it so if we wait too long our window of opportunity will close.

As I mentioned that area is really easy to walk in, and we could plan on walking south toward Rockwood. That side of the Sleeper has the larger savannahs that we saw but could not get to on the Rockwood Rocks hike. We don't have to make it a big planned hike, just an easy exploring one.

Nice report Guy. I hope you made Jessica cover her eyes when you came upon the underwear LOL. I try to get out to the great swamp pretty often and in the spring and summer there is sometimes a great deal of water in there. It seems to fluctuate a great deal. You know the rockwood bogs (end of desert hike) the name escapes me now. The water was up to my hips two winters ago. What an amazing area. The water seems to become deeper/more frequent as you move toward the south/east end toward pleasant mills.

Forgive me but my geography isn't all that up to snuff-are these areas pretty close together, as in you hiked to all of them or drove? I need to get down there more...

All the area's that posted photo's of in this thread are all very close to each other. The maps at my links show you where it is.

To get there from Atsion Lake head south on 206 and after 206 curves to the right go 2000 feet or a half mile to the first road on your left. That takes you to the area. But be warned the puddles are very deep and I recommend only heavy duty 4x4 for that road. I drove in as far as I could, parked, and walked. That is more interesting anyway.
