Hi everyone! For the past few months I've been fascinated with pine barrens history and I've decided to spice up my hiking trips by hiking out to the many ruins and ghost towns in my area. I live just a short drive from Bamber so I decided to make the first one a hike out to the Eureka Gun Club. I haven't been able to find many photos of the ruin, and none of the club in operation, so I decided to take a few of my own of what's left.

Reaching the place was amazing. It was a 90 degree day back in early August, we were almost out of water by the time we got to the Chamberlain. When we finally got to the ruin itself we almost didn't notice that we were practically standing on it. The area is a dense, grassy field and the ruins are almost completely buried under foliage. On a side note, if you ever find yourself on a relentless day-long hunt for a forgotten ruin, don't forget to switch back into long pants when going off-trail!

Aserdaten is a peaceful place, at least between the occasional roars of passing jeeps. When the wind wasn't blowing it was almost dead silent. There was a strange metal structure sitting on what I presume to have once been a lovely porch, pierced with bullet holes. Any idea what it could be?

We also found some pottery shards. In places like this it can be difficult to tell litter from artifact, but I like to imagine it's a clay pigeon someone peppered with birdshot long ago. The area was remarkably unspoiled - Black's Bridge is covered in the expected graffiti but Eureka seems unharmed by vandals. I guess this is because it's pretty hard to find, tucked away just enough that you wouldn't find it without knowing it was there.

Other than this, all that seems to remain of the Eureka Gun Club is concrete and history. If anyone knows when this place opened/closed, has any photos of the building before it was ruined, or can point me to any other information please let me know! I plan on going back to try and take more photos in the winter.

Very nice trip report.
I do have on question. I saw your exposed ankle in the one photo and I feel like I got chiggers just by looking at it. Did you have any issues with chiggers or ticks?

No, but in my experience when it comes to chiggers long pants don't make as much of a difference as wearing good bug spray, I switched from deet to picaridin and it works so much better. I've gotten chiggers on my feet under socks and boots without it. I definitely wouldn't return to the area without long pants, though.

Hello Squirrel,

I just want to point out that the location is not Aserdaten so can you clarify what you are referring to about Aserdaten?

In any event, if you do a search on this site, I and others have posted info about Eureka that you may or may not have viewed.

Is the location you were at right at Black's Bridge? Just want to make sure you were at the correct location of Eureka.

Thanks! I'll have to give that picaridin a try.

Yes, he was definitely there at Blacks Bridge, not Aserdaten. I can tell by that plant with the yellow flowers. It's not a pineland plant and has been there at the bridge for 15 years or so (Senna hebecarpa).

Squirrel, we who explore the pines wear these boots all the time out there. I feel vulnerable without them, and you can walk through water and mud with them. You can find them cheaper than this price sometimes.

Lacrosse has a 25% off sale each fall, typically the third week in November. I have backups of my 800g Alpha Burlys on hand and I buy them during these sales. I send the sale notice to my sons and my hunting and trapping buddies as soon as I see it. I will post it here when it comes up again.

I can live in the 800's year round. Two years ago I splurged on the 1600 Alpha Burly Pro for late winter hunting. Regularly $250 and they were 25% off. I am not too happy with them. Heavy and clunky and not warmer than the 800's for me.

I had two leaky pairs of old 800's that an old tire guy in Berlin. fixed for me. They are aging and cracking but I use them for working in wet high grass only. The repairs that man did will outlive the boots. I had him fix a pair of chest waders and those repairs outlasted the waders.

He came into my office this year for some surveying work and the first thing he asked was "How's the boots?" :)

I purchased my newest pair last year and the pair I have been using for many years is failing fast. I will be breaking the new pair out soon.

Remember when I sent them a couple letters and complained? They stepped up the quality somehow after that.

Yes I do. When I acquired my new boots that is the first thing I looked at. Not too bad.

Of course! I wanted a longer hike so I took a trail from the Bamber Lake suburb, just east of the quarry, that eventually leads to Jones Road and then headed up to Black's Bridge from there. I figured I was in the Aserdaten tract, at least on the hike up jones road, going by this post...which I'm just now realizing is yours, so thanks for all the research you've done! And yes, the location was very close to the bridge.

I've always stuck to the Moab 3s since they're a good all-around choice and they're pretty affordable, they've served me well for backpacking but I'll be the first to admit they immediately lose their advantages when you step off the trail. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely consider these.
